A match for sea foam green pearl?

Loading...

Happy New Year to all!

I have a set of Radio King shells that need wrap. I've been going back-and-forth on what color to use for a while, but I think I've finally decided...but it's a tricky one. I love the old sea foam green pearl, but no one makes it. However, drumMaker.com offers custom colors. So, I looked on their site at the marine pearl master color sheets and found one that is pretty close.

Would you guys mind taking a look at the attached picture and give me your thoughts? Has anyone ordered any custom pearl wraps from drumMaker? I'm concerned that the chip pattern may be so small that it wouldn't look right...Slingerland used a pretty large chip pattern back then.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

By the way, I have a 16x16 RK floor tom shell that I'd like to trade for another. Mine has no extra holes, no wrap, drilled for the small beavertail lugs. I'm looking for one that is a re-wrap candidate and was drilled the regular, large beavertails (or streamline lugs, I think the hole spacing is the same - please correct me if I'm wrong). I'll try to get a picture of mine and post in the trade section tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks again everyone!

Lynn

Hey Lynn! Hope you have been well. If and when you go with this just keep this in mind. Some places that make digital wraps (Bum Wraps) use 4 color process vs actual PMS colors. Most colors can be tweeked to match very close. Some can not. Here's a pic from my solid to process bridge. You can see the CMYK version is a little pale compared to the actual color. It looks close in this pic but is quite different in person. Just a heads up so you know. BTW there was a guy on ebay selling SFG for a while. It was a bit expensive as I remember. Hope Compact Drums can hook you up. It's such a cool classic color!

That's good info, Glenn! I appreciate that! I'll have to inquire as to the process used if I go with drumMaker, or whoever I go with. I've always loved sea foam green, but I don't want to end up with a poor copy. I had my mind made on green glass, but I'd never get a head on the snare if I went with something as thick as a glass wrap. I'll probably have to get creative no matter what I put on it...it was stripped of it's original wrap (or maybe duco) before it came to me, and it's already snug.

I've been well, just busy. I hope you have been well also.

Drum Maker does digital print CMYK I've been told. There was some discussion about it few years ago. Maybe in my old RK resto thread? Can't remember. I have heard they really can't get that sweet pearl depth look we all know and love. I bought some WMP off ebay and they guys still has some. The back is translucent so you can tint the shells to get desired colors. I'm doing a 13 and 20 a yellow tint to get aged/yellowed WMP. Only drawback it's a small chip pattern. But it's a actual praline wrap made in China. He also did a peacock pearl. You can always use opaque white base primer and tint it SFG in color. Pretty easy to do. Here's what wrap he has. Good luck!!

Oh BTW it was suggested to me to scuff and paint the back of the wrap vs the shell. This way glue layer is under the base tint color. I'll prob go that route on the 20". The 13" shell is already painted. Make sense though!! I thought that was a great suggestion. Forgot who said it though.

That is an interesting idea. I would have thought the contact cement would basically melt the paint, though?

Hmmmm not sure on that. Didn't some Ludwig or Slingerland get a white base under some wraps over the years? I have some small wood scraps I've primed and glued and they look ok. These were just for color but I'll need to look closer at them! I have left them about 6 months to see any adverse problems. Been a while since I check them though. Will follow up. More testing may be needed! This is the one I used.

I know some wraps had a white base, which I believe was part of the plastic wrap itself. I haven't heard of anyone painting the back side...not to say no one ever did, though. But hey, if you've done it with no adverse reactions, that's good enough evidence for me. Weldwood Contact Cement is what I would use as well. That stuffs so strong, I just figured the chemicals would react with the paint. I'm having flashbacks of the headaches I'd get after hours of gluing cigar bands to that snare drum a few years back. Eye Ball

Thanks for that info!
