A Hayman steel snare drum?

Loading...

Guys, need some big help. Have just got my hands on a snare drum. 14" x 6" seems all very normal. Untill you look at the badge... HAYMAN VIBRASONIC DRUMS and in small print at the bottom of the badge HAYMAN DRUMS, LONDON, ENGLAND. In ever Hayman picture I have ever seen I have never seen a steel snare drum. The snare strainer has a HAYMAN logo on it and the lug holders are the Hayman type (DW looking) style. The only thing that doesn't match my wooden (definatly real) Hayman snare is the internal muffling - which on the wooden type of snare is a lever - but on this steel snare its a knob.

Does anyone have any ideas what or if this is Hayman and when it would of been made. Any info would be brilliant.

Pictures are here... http://photobucket.com/garethlloyd

Thank you.

Gareth.

Hi,

There is a good Rhythm magazine article that has been posted, and quoted in the Wikipedia Hayman entry. I found it on Graham Jordan's site:www.grahamjordan.co.uk

I will just paste in here:

Initially the Hayman snare drums all had 5 1/2" deep wooden shells in common with the rest of the drums, but a year or so later aluminium-shelled versions were introduced. They were loosely modelled along the lines of Ludwig's 400, although in appearance, their shells were much more like Gretsch's. I'm told they didn't make too many metal drums so they’re evidently quite collectable.

Probably is what it seems a Hayman steel snare,

Per some badge information also on Jordan's site, you are probably looking at early seventies--although the Hayman window is pretty small:

# If the badge and/or snare strainer says "George Hayman", then it's from 1968-69.

# If the badge is a 4cm brass one with "Hayman - then it's 1969-73 (ish)

# If the badge is smaller and silver then it's one of the last to be made during 74/75.

Thanks Patrick but the bade is puzzling me...

On my Gold Hayman kit the badges all have a mention of DALLAS ARBITER and on the right of the badge have PAT. numbers....

The badge on the metal drum is different, it has no PAT. numbers and also no mention of DALLAS ARBITER instead it says HAYMAN DRUMS LONDON ENGLAND.

The other odd thing is that the HAYMAN has a small R in a circle after it, which is unlike all my badges on the gold kit.

Many thanks,

Gareth.

Interesting.

Dallas Arbiter was a brief marriage of John Dallas and Sons, musical instrument manufactures merged with Leo Arbiter (Sound City, music sales, Ringo's BOP kit). I cannot sort out the dates the merger started or ended. But Dallas disappeared from the equation while Arbiter kept putting out Haymans for a few more years.

So the badge variations might reflect the changes in the corporate governance, and the relative dates of manufacture versus when they were assembled for sale as a kit.

That snare looks like other metal Haymans, inverted bead, etc. The throw has more than a passing relationship to the Ludwig P83 by the look of it.

I hate to mention I have a Gretsch kit bought new with both SSB toms and SB badged kick. Incongruent badges do show up.

Anyway, I voted Yes, and hope you get more info.

cheers,

Patrick

I recall reading about a rare Hayman metal snare. I think that I actually saw one on Uk's Ebay. Now yours dont look quite right to me : The muffler and butt plate look asian, The grommet is not the like ones Ive seen and like the one I have (a complete Gold ingot set in 13,16,22 and 5x14).

The strainer and Lugs look original though

That position of the lugs above the flanged lip...I dont know: Im puzzled with your drum...More pixs maybe?

Look under "Hayman Drums" at the left of page and then "Other Peoples Haymen drums" about 1/4 the way down the page.

There are photos of a Hayman metal shell. Not quite like yours, more like a Ludwig as someone said. Yours looks more like a Rogers Dynasonic with those two beads around the shell. Maybe they made two types?????
