90s Slingerland identification

Loading...

Greetings,

It's my first post here, I know this kit is not a vintage one, but I didn't know if there was a more appropriate section to put this thread. Please tell me if there is one.

I recently purchased a New Old Stock Slingerland kit that I have troubles to identify in spite of intensive search on the internet.

It seems that it is probably be a kit for the 90s.

The shells are supposedly all maple (from what I was told at the store) and finished with a dark green lacquer. I contacted MusicYo that used to import them, but they told me that there was no all maple shell model, neither were lacquered ones.

The serial numbers are 9026XX (XX depending on the element). The badges look exactly like these ones (taken from an eBay auction).

Looking at the catalog pages on this site, the kit looks exactly like the Spirit / Spirit Plus models (especially the tom holders that are different on recent - like late 90s - imported ones), but the scan indicates all mahogany shells, and no lacquered finish is mentionned.

I know how to differenciate mahogany from maple on a guitar, but the wood is cut differently I think that for a drum, so the wood grain doesn't look the same.

The shop told me that there were two models at the time it was produced, one corresponding to a student model, the other one to a "pro" model, this one being of the "pro" kind.

Would you have more information about this set, or a catalog from that time? Thanks a lot.

You can see the lacquered finish on this one...

I personaly don't manage to identify the wood type.

I hope this helps.

Since the drums from the 90's arnt really vintage (the 80's are kinda the cutoff) I doubt the people here have as much knowledge about these drums BUT you should certainly email or private message DrCJW (i think thats it) and he should know.

Thank you for your answer. I've seen a couple threads on this forum dealing with these 90s sets, and that had very accurate info, so it seemed like I could give a try (realizing that this forum deals more with vintage stuff). I'll try to contact the person you're mentionning.

After a second look these look like 90's Slingerlands that were made by Gretsch.. I forget the name of the series though. DrJCW should know.

You have a 1992 Artist Power Custom kit finished in Emerald Green Lacquer. The Artist Custom line, made in Taiwan using wood shipped from North America, was the middle line carried by HSS during the Gretsch period of Slingerland ownership. As a middle line the Artists were sandwiched between the Spirit economy line made in Taiwan and the top line Slingerland Lites made in South Carolina.

The Artist Power Custom line had toms in the 2-inch deeper power sizes for the mounted toms and bass drums. Artist Custom shells were 5-ply with Canadian maple inner and outer plies and three plies of mahogany in the middle. Besides the shell composition, matching lacquered wood bass drum hoops were a feature that differentiated the Artist line from the Spirits, which used metal bass drum hoops. Hardware fixtures, as shown on your drums, were essentially the same on both the Spirits and Artist Customs.

Overall, the sound of the Artist Custom line bass drums and toms was held in high regard by many professional drummers.

Below is an archive brochure photo, picturing your Emerald Green kit.

I'm just coming back from holidays and I find this new post: THANKS A LOT, DrCJW! This is very precise and valuable information... I'm glad it can also help another member. It's also reassuring about my purchase: although I liked the sound of it when I tried it, being a drum newbie doesn't make me an expert in choosing a set. Your info basically corresponds to what the music store guy told me (although he was much less precise and accurate).

I guess I'll be able to keep this set for a little while (as long as I get better cymbals). band2

Happy new year...

(and thank you to bebop too)

This is the most info on these kits I've found. HSS Hohner Distributed and comprised of a Bottom of the Line series of Spirits/Spirit Plus and then the lite that contain a unique 6 Ply VSS super thin maple shell and non Pearl mounts. I got a 4 piece kit in 94 as it was ordered for clinic in 93 for Bobby rock as HSS could'nt get any of the Sonor kits that he endorsed at the time and it was sold for a steal. The brochure for the spirit plus has the Pearl mounts and These S. Carolina gretsch made Spirit Lite shells are some of the first VSS type Shells on the market. from the Image I provide is from my 12" you can't see the outer shell it's lighter and the alternating plys the grain appears to darken due to the maple grain. Small toms are 5.5mm 5PLy and bass is 7Ply and they project with a warm clean sound with RIMS replacing the crap Spirit L CLAWs. I also have a Spirit 13" and it is cheap Mohohany with pearl mounts and no Isolation gaskets on the hardware but stull sound decent.

I like to know more about when the artist series came out.

Anyone find any of these Slingerland lite shells from 92 just before gibson bought slingerland please let me know. I love the sound of these lites and have played them for 15 years.

Hi all

Sorry I can't add any info but do have a kit of my own which I think is similar. Here are the pics, I just purchased from a friend who was the original owner.

He confirmed it was an Artist (custom?) series but didn't have any further details. I'm guessing it's around the same era as the kit above, early 90's I'd say around 94. Shells I'm told are maple with birch in between, they are stamped "Taiwan". As you can see, the kit came with a custom piccolo snare which is hard to tune, as well as an 18" bass drum. Hardware is the same as the Power Custom we're talking about here.

Any further info would be appreciated.

Thanks!
