80s TAMA Swingstar- help identify!

Loading...

As far as i can see is this set a wee bit past 1980:-) Maybe 84 or so!

Before the 80s Swingstars had the same lugs as Royalsars the ones that looked like an arrow head! I have a picture her from a 76 Kit.

Also the tomholders are passed the 1980!

Those swingstars could only be 84 because of the red badge and box type lugs. They were only made for 1 year like that.

I sold a five piece minus the snare for $200 locally. They had the zolocoating inside and sounded great!

Ten Tama drums for $600

Sell the cymbals and hardware separately.

I just acquired three 80's tama swingstar toms.

they are 12,13,14"......they are deeper than the other toms on a swingstar set I sold to my friend a year ago. I will say, the previous set seems to have skimped on the quality......these ones I just bought sound better in my opinion....I do not think shallower toms are always better......maybe its just the wood used, but I think its a matter of dimension also.....I feel like whoever bought the black swingstar new, that I bought used got jipped.

I just snagged a jet black Swingstar, same period with the box lugs. I bought them for a Supra and figured I'd flip 'em after a thorough clean. Well they sound great to my ears, tune easily (and stay that way) and are generally well built for a mid-entry level kit. The toms are running EC2s w/ no muffling of any kind and old stock resos and have a nice warm resonance. Strangely, they when I re-tuned them I slacked off all the tension and found that they ended in a higher register rather rapidly. I did not expect this kit to sound jazzy in the least. Dare I say that played w/ no muffling it kinda sounds like Holiday shells if they had the tone control on a bit. I'm keeping 'em for sure and will definitely be gigging them soon (tom 1 and the floor made it to a gig already). Pics to come when they are finished.

Use the option to send the original poster/seller a private message. This was listed over a few years ago. They may not have them or even check VDF anymore. Good luck.

If the Swingstar lugs match the Imperialstar lugs ,then they are early to mid 80's.

Tama changed the lug design on the early Swingstars as the Imperialstars had the exact same lugs and they competed against each other at a different price point.

I owned both kits at one point.

Swingstars never used the same lugs as Imperialstars. Superstars & Imperialstars shared the same lugs. Swingstars at one point had the point lugs which we also used on the Royalstars, as well as Octobans.

Your serial numbers have this format: 84-xxxxx.

The first 2 digits mean the decade, so it's from 1984.
