I have been using my 14 as a FT (mounted on a snare stand),for the past several years... sometimes with the 18 or sometimes as a 4 piece minus the 18"

Cheers

John

I used the set on the gig last night, in a room that is not particularly good from an acoustic standpoint. I made the following observations:

The bass drum is too muffled with the large portion of the Evans pillow inside resting against the front head. I'm going to reverse it today and see if that helps. The bandleader though, loved it, but he always likes a dead bass drum. Soap Box

The batter heads on the toms aren't for me, but they came with the set. They are new Remo coated Emperors on top and Evans G1s on the bottom, which are acceptable, although the Emperors were badly marked up after the first set. I am no fan of Remo heads, other than your basic 14" Ambassador on a snare drum. I'll be ordering Evans UV-1s this week for all three toms. The bass drum batter head is also a Remo, and that may go in favor of an Evans EMAD.

The 24" bass drum was not too large to prevent comfortable positioning of the 13" rack on a stand, but I have a feeling it will be uncomfortable for me to use the 14" rack tom and get it into a good position. I'll just have to experiment. I tried using the Set-O-Matic single arm tom holder, and that didn't work out very well.

The set looked great! No question about that, but I have to touch up a few wear marks on the rack toms with a little model paint or a Sharpie.

The 18" floor tom needed two MoonGels to contain the ring a bit and get the sound more focused. No surprise, as all my 16" toms require a bit of dampening also.

All told, I'm very pleased with my purchase. I think this set is a keeper.

Ugh, there's still not enough resonant ring to the bass drum with the pillow reversed. I'm going back to the tried and true felt strips on both heads for now.

I have used an Emad & at present use a Superkick1, for me either works fine with sometimes a felt strip on your reso. Agree 14" sits too high on the single post.

Cheers John

I usually use an EMAD batter too. This BD came with Remo Powerstroke heads on front and back, and they just don't work for me. I'm ordering Evans heads this week.
