72 Ludwig Hollywood Last viewed: 9 hours ago

Hi experts - this is my first post :)

i am looking at buying a 72 Ludwig Hollywood, my first vintage kit. i am intending to gig with this kit so i am interested in the sound predominently and how it will stand up to a life on the road, particularly the tom mount, floor tom legs and kick spurs.

i have seen the Ludwig shell contruction guide, my question is - were ALL shells made as per this guide? if so i can assume that these should be maple poplar\maple. Seller says they are maple but i don't know how they could tell apart from this guide. How much would you pay for this kit (12", 13", 16", 22")?

thanks and hope to become a regular soon!

If the interiors are clear maple, with rerings it is a maple /poplar/ maple kit,if the interiors are granitone/grey speckled they are probably 1972 or later, and the shells could be mahogany poplar mahogany or a mix of both,I bought a Ludwig kit new in 1978,and it was 3 ply,and a mix of clear int and granitone shells. As far as the hardware goes for gigging on the road,if the kit is well taken care of and not road weary already it should hold up pretty well,I have had two kits from that era,the main problem I had was with the tom/bracket mounts, the eye bolt that goes around the tom post is round and smooth on the inside, which means you have to tighten down the bolt or wingnut tighter and tighter as time goes on and you can actually start to cave the mount in over time, there is a couple of easy mods you can do,you can buy a newer eye bolt that is serrated or toothed which will bite much better,or you can buy a newer Ludwig tom bracket which will fit the older 9.5 mm tom post and comes with a memory lock,it takes the pressure of the mount to keep it from swiveling and wearing out.I think they are about 15 dollars U.S.The hole spacing is the same so you won't have to drill/ devalue your kit.As far as price goes,if it is a granitone kit in a less desirable 70's type wrap, say butcher block or Mahogany cortex, you could get a 3/4 piece for 500.00 to 700.00 easily,a classic wrap like silver sparkle or wmp would be a couple of hundred more,a clear int 1968 to 1972 in a classic desirable wrap can get into the 1200 to 1700 range.Personally if it were me and I was getting a road kit I would go for the granitone kit, there are a lot of really good sounding ones out there and the less desirable cortex wraps are tough as nails durability wise, and a great value for the money.Just my two cents.Welcome to the forum by the way.
