70's Yamaha Kit

Loading...

Hi new member here. I have just found this great site and i will be looking for some info on my kit. I think it's a 1970's kit finnished in chrome. The serial numbers for the toms range from 0625 to 0650 and the snare i think is a SDM5 with a 0595 serial number. The condition of the kit is quite good and i think the skins are original. I also have a pair of Rodgers hats 14" with red lettering and a Paiste 602 ride. There is an assortment of hardware as well. I can e-mail some photos of the kit if anyone wants, but the files are quite large. Any help or info on this kit would be most helpful.

Yep...it's a very EARLY Yamaha kit...late, late 60's or early 70's...somewhere between '69-72....one of the first produced, actually. You see 'em on eBay now and again.

Nice little piece of history....Yamaha existed about a decade or so before they really made any impact on the continental market.

Nice ride cymbal too!Welcome.

Thanks Drum Dad

The cymbal still gets played everyweek and still sounds good as well although I have now retired the hi hats even though they still played great too.

Thanks again for your reply.

Thanks Jaye for your reply. I have been given a contact in Yamaha but as yet they have still to respond. I didn't realise just how early the kit was. The kit sounds great and still has the original skins as well. It is going to get a good cleaning over the next few weeks and as i don't use this kit any more it might well end up on e-bay as well.

Thanks again

eFlayers haven't really...evolved... an appreciation for vintge Japanese kits to date, just FYI. Even though it's an example of a very early Yamaha....

You may get like $300 for it...but not a whole lot more than that...so...if you don't need the $ right now, I might suggest cleanin' 'er up and keeping her for a while longer....

Hi There, I'm new to the site. I happen to notice that the Yamaha snare I have looks similar to yours. Do you perhaps know what material was used for the shell?

Hi there Shannon.

Good to here from you and welcome to the site. The snare is made of metal possably steel but i don't know for certain. It certainly sounds good although i have stopped playing it now. Let me know if you want more photos of the snare so that you can compare it with yours or if there is anything else that i can help you with.

Thanks for the reply. I found out it is steel (tested with a magnet). But it does really sound great. Just used it on two albums. I actually us it as my main snare now. Love the fact that it has internal muffeling, seem to be able to use it in any venue. Would never have thought I'd be using something this like this, but if it works why change. Regards Shannon
