70's Royce...Any Good?

Loading...

I came across a 70's Royce for $99...clean looking 5 piece. I don't know much about these, but I remember my buddy had a set in jr. high in the mid 70's...

Who made them, where, and how do they compare to the late 60's MIJ drums. I don't hear much about them at all on the forum...

Thanks

Probably Early/Mid 80's. Pearl made.........and most probably made in Taiwan. To me, these aren't nearly as good as true vintage MIJ's.

These aren't great drums, but for $99 and a nice Premier pedal, if you like them, then go for it.

You did see it's local pickup only from Chicago, yes?

Isn't it interesting that budget kits today (or really any kits for that matter) don't use white wrap anymore? I wonder when/why it fell out of favor.

There is a clear difference in quality if you compare "Pearl" with "Pearl stencils" or even "Made by Pearl". It is easy to assume that they all are the same drums, only assembled in different factorys. -Not so.

The pictures show what appears to be two similar Tom Lugs.

The one to the left is a 70s "Pearl" made in Japan, it weighs 48 grams.

The one to the right is a 70s "Maxvin by Pearl" made in Taiwan, it weighs 36 grams.

The difference becomes obvious when you look inside the lugs. The Taiwan lug is much thinner and lacks the reinforcement around the thredded holes.

The same goes for probably every detail on the drum. It looks the same but the quality just isn't there.

Those are NOT 70's drums-they are 90's/2000's.Tubular mounts. My early 70's Royce drums are basically identical to other low-line Pearls, except for the spurs and tom mounts. The spurs were the old rod type, and the tom mounts were the late 60's hex rod style.
