70's Pearl Lug Mounting Screw Thread Size Last viewed: 10 hours ago

Loading...

I am restoring a Blaemire 14x16 Concert Tom that came with the old Pearl Lugs.

The lugs screws must of had 3 or 4 washers to pack out the space due to the thin shell thickness of Blaemires.

I really do not want to use the extra washer remedy.

What I need is shorter screws.

I thought I knew the Pearl lug thread size.

But...............I don't.

Went to OSH.

But 4 mil, 7 pitch was too big.

3 mil was too small.

Anyone know what the lug screw thread size is?

Or is it a custom Pearl metric creation?

Anyone re-tapped them for standard 8-32?

6-32 was too small.

Thanks

I've had the same problem with older Pearl lugs. I used the cone shaped washers found on some steel (COS) snares. I know this isn't at all what you were looking for, but I never could find a correct thread / size screw for the lugs.

I've built lots of drums. I've come upon this same situation. I just cut down the length of each of the mounting screws. Just set yourself up for some time spent with a vise and a thin cutting wheel on the Dremel. The cutting wheel that comes with the tool works quickly, just be sure that you don't have a lot of sided to side movement or you will break several of the thin cutting wheels. The screws will get hot.

Thanks Rik,

I tried cutting off the length of these screws with a grinder set up with a carborendum blade.

I have done this many times before and have used a belt sander to round off the ends. Usually making a friendly point on the cut end, so cut screw end will easily find it's threaded path.

BUT.............The Pearl screws have a non-removable washer that gets in the way of my belt sander.

I guess I will try the dremel way and use my file sander (very small belt sander)

to round off ends.

OR, I may attempt to re-tap these threads.

(Sacrificial Lug) To see if 8-32 will work.

I guess Pearl just picked a random thread pattern.

For what reason?

I really like to know my thread sizes.

Thanks again Mr. Everglade

2 thoughts.

1. Not a machine thread on the screws. I have seen some lugs with sheet metal type threads that cut into the lugs boss instead of like a machine thread.

2. Did you try fine vs coarse thread pitches? I recently could not find the correct thread pitch. Went to a specialty hardware store and they figured out the pitch I needed was a fine metric thread when what I was trying was the coarse metric thread pitch.

After "visiting" numerous hardware stores, I opted for cannibalization.

I re-tapped the threads with an 8-32 tap.

No pre-drill. Went right in, straight in with some WD-40.

Blew out the bosses. Wiped off the tap.

Did it again.

8-32 by 1/4" long, tapered head, phillips screw with #8 Finish Washer.

All holding fine.

Thanks for the suggestions fellas.
