70's Pearl kit

Loading...

We get quite a few used kits in the store where I teach, and a few weeks ago an old Pearl 5pc kit came through the door. It's easy to dismiss many old kits that aren't Ludwig, Rogers, or Slingerland as junk, I'm intrigued by this Pearl. Here's the thing, though: it's in very, very rough shape. The wrap is peeling in most of the drums, and completely gone off two. All the hardware is rusty, though it looks like its all there, save for maybe a missing floor tom hoop. From what I've been able to deduce, it's probably 70's era, maybe '73 based on the tom holders. I can't find the finish in any Pearl catalog, so I'm thinking it was re-wrapped at some point. I attached some pics in case someone may know better. The tom arm/mount pics are not from this kit-I pulled them from the 'net-because the kits up on a high shelf & I didn't want to pull it down just for a pic. The first pic is from this kit, though.

I'm sure you can guess what I'm getting at--is this kit worth restoring, or should we just part it out? I realize that by the time we clean it up and rewrap it we probably won't make any money on it, but I'm wondering how they sounded...is it worth the time and money for me to have a potentially "gigable" kit?

You will not make a significant amount of money by parting it out, unless you got it for free. In that case, you could make about $150. 70' Pearl parts are a dime-a-dozen. I've got a large bucket of parts right here, and two 18" flanged hoops, with rust. If they are fiberglass, then the wrap comes off easily, and I'd like a 14" fg shell.

Leave it as is, gig them as is. If they get stolen, so what. Give them to some young kid that cannot afford a decent set that's above starter quality.

I redid my old 70's fg Pearl set, with brand new BLR lugs that fit the original holes perfectly, but I won't ever pretend that I'd get what I put into it. But it's a great all weather kit.

First, of all, I agree that it's not going to be worth re-wrapping with traditional wrap if you're planning on re-selling. They just don't have the resale value. I have refurbed several of these types of kits with a wood veneer wrap that I got real cheap (some seconds from a cabinet factory). But no, didn't get big money out of any of the sets -- and when you figure in my time, no, didn't make any money to speak of. I just love this era of Pearl drums!

However, I have some comments and questions...

The tom mount was used throughout most of the 70s, not just in 73. They switched to the 7/8 tube mount around 1978.

Unless I'm color-blind, your first picture appears to be some sort of Black Oyster Pearl, and the second appears to be Blue Oyster Pearl. The Blue was available in the 1973 ond 1975 catalogs (American market), and the black was never available in the American market, at least in the catalogs I have access to. Pearl also offered a Red Oyster Pearl in the 73 catalog. The wrap problems shown in the first picture are normal for the oyster wrap Pearl used -- it just couldn't take temperature changes at all. I've removed both red and blue from drums (and have rolled the old up it anyone need patches!)

What are the sizes of the drums?

What is the shell construction?

Do you have more pictures?

Thanks!
