Okay, I am going back to my original plan. I was very inspired by hawghunters walnut thermogloss kit a while ago and that is what it will be. I do think that with a little more practice and patience I could do the burst finish. But the drums were intended to re-sell, so Im going with what I think will be the best seller finish. Right now Im burned out on working on drums but maybe sometime down the road I will get the itch again and do another kit. I feel like the burst finish can be done, so I will have to try it again.

The edges are all done and look real good in my opinion. My only problem is the inside of the shells are ugly. I have removed layers and layers of paint and I am down to the bare wood with some black paint deep down in the grain that wont let go. I had said earlier that I would just paint them white, but now I dont want to. I could spray some clear with golden tint in it to achieve a more uniform color. Or just leave them alone, thats what I did with my Zebra kit and they sound great. Will clear lacquer effect the sound much? Does anyone even care what the inside looks like? Im open for suggestions as I am very close to wrapping the drums and finishing them. But I need a plan for the interior first. Any suggestions?

Wow, that is an amazingly beautiful kit! I don't think you could possibly go wrong with that finish. The interior of that drum would not bother me at all. I would leave it as is.

Thanks Randy! Ya that walnut kit is pretty. So, leave the shell the way it is, no finish at all?

A clear coat would nice as well. I think they look good as is also. Tough choice!

I too think the interiors look fine. Like Randy mentioned, clear would look good too. Either way Jeff.

Man Jeff, I am really diggin your work ! Pic#3, the color in the center of that drum looks real close to the fade on my old Ludwig`s. Not too far off from this amberbock that i`m drinking. LOL. Tommy, thanks for the pic, I did not realize yours had faded that much. I actually like the faded better then the original. I drink beer that color too!

So Im looking around on the web last nigh and I see Gretsch has a walnut gloss finish that is absolutely stunning. So this and Tommy's kit are the target now. I know exactly what to do. Now that the pressure of figuring out the burst finish is over I can get on with it.

This tom even looks to be birch wood under that walnut stain.

They're going to look great Jeff. I'd put something on the inside, just to protect the wood. I love the look of both clear and white. Maybe I like white better when the heads are off and it contrasts with the wood finish...but the heads are usually on.
