70s Ludwig Kit

Loading...

Hi everyone. Earlier today I saw a Ludwig kit for sale, and was wondering if anyone here could give me information on what kit it is, and what it is worth. It is a 3 piece kit with a 2 toms and the kick. The serial numbers are 1114283 for the smaller tom, 1090950 for the floor tom, and 1114157 for the kick. By the newer badge, I know it's a 70's kit. They are a brown wood grain color, and in good condition with no major cosmetic damage. Any ideas?

It looks like a Big Beat kit minus the 13" tom tom.

I presume the diameter dimensions are 12/(13)/16/22

The finish is either walnut cortex or mahogany cortex (I think) and the cortex finishes were very durable and not prone to scratches and fading the way some of the other finishes were. From what I can see, the drums look like they are in good shape. I even see one of the original "dB' series drumheads -which I always consider a good sign. I would like to confirm that the tom mount is for two tom toms? If so, then it for sure is a Big Beat configuration minus the 13" tom.

They are 3-ply shells -likely the interiors are clear maple...right?

Value is probably somewhere between $450-$750+ depending on the day and the alignment of the planets Party Find the missing 13" tom and get a decent Supra and some appropriate stands and pedals and you will soon be re-living the old-school Ludwig experience!

The old cortex finishes, while very durable, still don't seem to command a high desirability rating among collectors...but, ya never know....something like these finishes just may become the next big thing.

Looks like Walnut Cortex. It's more brownish than my Ludwig kit with Mahogany Cortex which have a more red colour tone.

I would love to come across a standard kit (12, 13, 16, 22) in Mahogany cortex to supplement my kit but they seem to be in short supply...

Yes the mount is for two toms, and you have the sizes right. It would be nice to find the third tom, but the way I set up my kit doesn't lend itself to many high toms (lots of jazz, funk, second line ala Stanton Moore.)

The interiors are clear maple as you said.

Thanks for the help! Looks like I'll have myself a decent kit in a couple of days.

aaronufl,

What could be more seventies than that wrap? I bet if you used some wax and buffed it out it would look great. It sounds like you and I are into similar styles. Stanton Moore is one of my favorites. I'm sure you enjoy John Vidokovich, Russell Baptiste, Mean Willy Green, Rebirth and Zig Modelist. If any of those names are new to you, check 'em out. Most of those guys are seen with double rack toms, for what it's worth. But good luck finding the 13.

Keep in touch.

Ah, I know and love all of those drummers and groups. I'm also a big Billy Martin fan. Great, great music. Stanton uses the one mounted and two floor toms, but I usually like my setup to my be a shrunk down version of his with a a lot of extra little percussion goodies. I did borrow his pandeiro on the left side as drum idea though, since I already had one lying around. Lots of Brazilian rhythms share roots with second line and new orleans stuff, so it's quite a cool thing.

And it's official. I picked the kit up for 300 bucks. Quite a good deal if I do say so myself.
