6" Gretsch tom - HELP

Loading...

Hi guys,

I've found a 6" Gretsch tom w/diecast hoop for sale. It a model M4412, serial number 133289 in perfect condition, though re-coated by professional. As Gretsch dont produce this small drum anymore, the sellers is asking 500$ for it. Is it that much worth, and how big a collectors item is this drum really? And does anyone know in which years it is produced?

Thanks,

Larry

I had a 6 " Gretsch tom that I purchased in the early 80's ( Stop sign badge) it had heads on both ends with off set lugs. They weren't supplying diecast hoops on the 6 "8 " and 10 " toms at the time and I had purchased all three sizes at the time to go with my 18/12/14 kit. I can't say I really used the 6 " very much as it had a very small tuning range and I just never really liked the really high pitch sound of it.The 8 " and 10 " sounded much better to my ear.

I quite like the 6"-sound, and i fits perfectly to my rather odd Gretsch-kit with 8" tom/13" floor/16" bass. But isn't 500$ too much?

If I'm not mistaken, I think the 6" double-head toms were available during the mid to late '70s.

Yes -- $500.00 is outrageously high-priced for a small tom that barely anyone every uses or even much wants. They're rare only because low sales didn't facilitate making many of them.

Tuned too high, they tended to "bap," and tuned too low, they "poinged." Don't even bother putting a mic to one, because all you'll get is a very brief attack sound - no tone.

I agree with RickP - the 8" had a great tone. Enough shell and enough volume to sing with the rest of the toms. But the 6"... Nah. They're about as useful as 6" splash cymbals.
