'65 Bronze Mist Club Dates In Action (Finally)!

Loading...

Howdy,

Been awhile since I was on the hunt for a second set of '65 Club Dates for my rockabilly gig with the Straight 8s. I made the mistake of falling in love with the bronze mist lacquer finish, but managed to find a 12/14/20 shell pack and then a matching pioneer snare on reverb. I say "mistake" only because this finish is somewhat hard to come by, and even harder to find shells that aren't scarred up or flaking like crazy.

The BD shell had some sort of hardened duct tape residue on it. There wasn't a lot of it, but what was there was like concrete. It took 16+ hours or rubbing small circles with Ronsonol lighter fluid. That stuff is amazing! Not so much because it works fast (it doesn't) but because it did absolutely no harm to the 50 year old lacquer finish. The rest of the drums needed very little... just general cleanup and oiling the lugs.

You can see the finished kit in action in the new Straight 8s video here:

These drums just sound amazing and have a look that seems to compliment the 8's style of music. Funny how tastes change... when I was younger, I don't think I would have gone out of my way to play a set of "plain looking brown drums". LOL Nowadays I'd probably pick up another set just in case something happened to these. :-)

Wow! Nice video! Wish the lighting was brighter so we could see the bronze better, but the playing's nice, & the set-up is very cool. I need to try standing & playing; I found it hard for an old guy like me, but you make it look fun. Enjoy your Club Dates; you worked hard for them.....marko

Thanks, Marko! The vid was a complete DIY project headed-up by our upright player. I'm still blown away by the results of his first attempt at a music video. Evidently there are some ISO camera settings that resulted in the video being a tad dark (and hard to correct after the fact).

As for standing and playing... I scoffed at the notion ~9 years ago when I started playing with the band. But being eye-level with bandmates and having a chance to connect with the audience more than makes up for lack of a hi-hat. :-) Plus less gear to load in/out!

It did take some time to get comfortable, so if you have an interest, you should definitely give it a shot! Thanks again!!!

Thanks again, guys! Stumbled on a gig photo that better shows the lacquer finish. Love the way these came with gold sparkle hoop inlays!

Cheers,

Murph

One of my all-time favorite bands, Southern Culture on the Skids has an awesome stand-up drummer, Dave Hartman. An article I read explained that the band started out learning songs with Dave playing brushes on the cushions of the couch while standing up behind it. They got their first gig before they had even practiced with a real kit, so he did the gig just standing up behind a snare drum and played what he played on the couch.

Stop stringing and tuning your instrument, make music now.

Thanks, Mark!

Dave is an incredible pocket drummer (whether he's standing or sitting). Super nice guy to boot. We've shared the bill at a number of shows and always cool bumping into him around town. Another interesting thing about Dave's playing is that he's actually a lefty (even though his kit is set up for a right-handed player).

Dave is a little short, but I'd hardly call him a "pocket drummer".;)
