OK, OK, I know some don't like these types of posts... but I couldn't resist. IF I was closer (this is close to 200 miles from me), I wouldn't hesitate. I may try to work something out anyway. I haven't called yet.

There was another Pearl set listed about 40 miles away from this one (closer to me)... so I called that one, thinking that maybe "drum run" was developing. But it was already sold.

So... I'm still thinking at this point...

Oh yeah, here's the link, just posted this evening:

http://salina.craigslist.org/msg/3287936456.html

He lists the BD as an 18" but the pictures say (to me) that it's bigger than that. But, that don't matter to me. The pictures make it look pretty good, especially for the price.

What do you think?

That's a good six hour round trip and gas is over $4 a gallon, but hell, $80 for a piece of drum history?

Looks clean and it's got the matching snare!

I've got a Dixie that is pretty much identical to that - but with a 14in FT. I have had it since 1986 and after getting the edges recut a couple years ago - they sound great, especially since I have, in recent years, learned how to tune and what best heads to use.

My vote is to go for it, but you could fit it all in a small car and save money. Perhaps you can work out a deal where the guy works----maybe he works an hour away, and an hour closer to you. Have him take them to work and do the deal there - and save $20 in gas. Never hurts to ask. I have gotten that thrown in the deal to close the deal and save gas money in the process.

For that BD, I rounded off the batter-side edge real well, used wood hoops, used Aquarian SKI and actually nothing inside for muffling (as long as you have a resonant head with a built-in ring) and it sounds great.

Toms - I timbre-pitch the shells to discover their natural resonating pitch, tune the heads (single ply) to that note, use studio rings and they sound real nice and warm.

That snare will actually sound good too - but the key on this (for all these) is to have TRUE EDGES cut very well. Without good edges - they will never sound good. Mine suffered for 20 years with bad edges, and once I had them re-cut - they just came to life!

Use backing plates for those small round BD leg mounts....that really helps re-inforce and preserve the shell.

That's an 8 lug snare - which is a bonus. Usually they are 6s.
