60s STAR 4-piece re-wrap/re-lug mutant score

Loading...

Ok gents, here are the photos and intial impressions- I will post more later when I get to the house.

Let`s start with saying- it`s definitley 60s- whatever it is- the shells are old- lots of unusual hardware replacement- it was from Awaji Island- so maybe he rebuilt it using lots of parts he could find. The spurs are vintage pearl- the lugs are Tama Granstar. The snare lugs he said are original- as are the strainer and butt. The snare is ten lugs but with an old time shell and rings- there are no extra holes in the drum. check it- we can start with the snare (kit photos to follow)

OK, those are indeed Star snare lugs. The strainer...I'll have to look back at catalogs...The wrap..is it vinyl? Those are the Slingerland SoundKing lug copies that aere almost indistinguishable from the real thing.

I'll go check the cats and run along back in a moment.

OK, here is the page....strainer is correct.

ok -thanks for being patient- here are shots of the drums and shell interiors-

This kit used to have single lugs in the center of the shells- like Stage Lite or Stardust (72)- the holes have been well filled and sanded then painted. The snare luckily is original- no extra holes at all. The wrap is a thin, aftermarket sparkle- like a thin vinyl. I am thinking to buy some nicer wrap from DrumMaker.com (maybe an oyster pearl) and re-do then next month I`m planning.

Finally, some nice, lightweight vintage TAMA hardware- here is a nice single braced cymbal stand- I like that thin solid post top tier

I got the matching hat stand to this cymbal stand- will photo later today.

Overall, the restorer gets an A grade for attention to detail and care on the shell painting and hole filling. These shells are so thin that he had to cut down each new screw- ouch, what a chore!... but he did it well. His wrap job left some wrinkles which is no good- but it was more the material than his workmanship. Putting strong and attractive Tama lugs wasn`t a bad choice IMO if the old ones weren`t replaceable.

From a quick play of them last night- they are surprisingly big and resonant sounding- They seem to like a middle range open tuning (I usually tune high)- As I consider rewrapping them myself- I`ll play them a bit to get a sense of who they are-

Thin, single lug stars is how they started out- Stardust? Stagelite? that is my guess. Hope you enjoy the shots! Sumo Dude

Yeah, these don't play well tuned high. These thin shells are like early 60s Slingy 3 ply, just big, boomy and low toned. These are the shells I love, BOOM!!! As for the wrap, I would look at something new, and if you join Alibaba, you get into the Chinese guys and find some of the new vintage retro stuff that is super cool. Ali is a trade site that gets you access to all the worlds marketplace...
