'60s SLINGERLAND PLAYER'S KIT

Loading...

I always loved the look of Green Glass Glitter kits so some time ago I decided to put together a “player’s kit” and have it finished in that wrap. I had purchased some Slingerland 3-ply tom shells from the ‘60s as well as a Leedy & Ludwig snare drum shell to be used for the kit. The Slingerland black & brass badges had already been removed from the tom shells before I purchased them. However, someone on e-Bay was selling some “replica” badges that I picked up at a reasonable price. The Leedy & Ludwig snare still had its original badge on it.

I already had a Slingerland all natural maple 3-ply bass drum from the early ‘70s. The maple shell was in such excellent condition that I decided not to install a wrap on it.

My good friends over at the Precision Drum Company provided the wrap for the toms and the snare drum. I was very happy with the way the kit turned out. However I was still looking for a 3-ply bass drum shell from the ‘60s to have wrapped to match the toms and the snare. Fortunately I found one in the local area with its original Slingerland black & brass badge. Precision Drum provided the wrap. I thought that some natural (unpainted) wood hoops would look good with the green glass glitter wrap and since this was going to be a player’s kit anyway I decided to purchase a pair from P.D. and keep them in their “natural state”. Once they arrived I treated them with five coats of Howard Product’s Feed & Wax. My group’s logo seen on the BD head was done in the local area.

The Slingerland all natural maple bass drum originally used with the kit will now be used as part of an all natural maple kit I’m currently putting together. I’ve got everything but the floor tom. If anyone knows where I might be able to purchase one at a reasonable price please feel free to drop me a line. Thanks!

And who says re wraps aren't worth anything, those are awesome!!! You must have had to put on an addition just to house your collection.

kevins: Thanks for the positive feedback. I appreciate it! How has that Powertone been working out for you?

lucky: I actually put on an addition several years back. My "lovely bride" refuses to add another (lol)! If I don't break this "addiction" it might be one less husband in the humble abode.DOH

Time to start moving something.

LudwigLover: Thanks for the kind words. They really do sound nice and the L&L snare has a wonderful "crack" to it.

THANKS for the positive words, James!

If and when I get the natural maple kit completed I'll make sure to post some pics. Finding that floor tom is proving to be quite a challenge.:(

I LOVE Green Glass Glitter! You picked the perfect wrap to go with your "player's kit" of vintage shells. The natural maple hoops really go great with the GGG. Kudos with your project. Enjoy them!
