60's Olympic 20" bass drum with 6 lugs, undesirale?

Loading...

Hey guys I'm thinking of buying a vintage Premier or Olympic kit with sizes 20/12/16. I know they had the same shells and reinforcement rings, but a 20" Olympic bass drum will have only 6 lugs, whereas a premier of the same will have 8.

does this make the Olympic undesirable or great, soundwise? can any olympic owners out there answer this?

thanks a lot

I wish I could give you a good answer; I just got a 20" 6-lug Olympic myself, but don't have the same heads on it as on my 8 lug Super-Olympic. Plus, by the 70's, the inner ply had changed to mahogany, where my earlier Oly is birch. So not a great comparo. What I will say, is that with cheap MIJ 6 lug BDs, the wooden hoops are so flexible that they don't do real good job of evenly distributing the force. Metal hoops, or higher quality hardwood hoops (as would've come on an Olympic) should do a decent job. But you won't get as good a control of tension as you would with two more lugs. On the plus side, less-hardware means less shell dampening, and lighter weight. I say go for it, but cost should be less, naturally.
