60's Natural Wood Slingerland Snare

Loading...

I have what I THINK is a natural wood8 lug walnut stain Student Model Slingerland snare from the 60's (the stamp in the shell reads "MAR65")

See pix here: http://pbckt.com/sb.1SV

The Badge is Niles and has the original throw-off (seems to work fine after applying a little oil, but is missing one mounting screw) and hoops.

The original thumbscrew tone control is attached and the felt is in suprisingly decent condition.

All tension rods are present, however, a few of the washers are missing.

There are several cracks on the inside of the shell around some of the lug mount screws, badge grommet, etc., as well as a couple of long fine cracks. The shell is good condition, however and shows NO SIGNS of any cracks or dents, etc. There are some surface stains and similar signs of aging on the shell.

All lugs are present as is the original butt plate.

The re-rings in fine shape (no signs of damage), save for a very slight bit of separation on the reso side ring.

Can some of the SLINGY Gurus tell me what this is worth? I'm planning on selling it (either to a Craigslist guy or perhaps to someone on this forum).

Thanks,

Jeff

With a tone control and sticksaver hoops, I think it is a Hollywood Ace. The Student Model has 8 lugs, single flange hoops with clips, and no tone control.

You can find them both in the '65 cat scan in the Drum Guide.

Looks a little like Mahogany finish...does it not? I don't know.

Mahogany finish on maple. I have never seen that type muffler, I don't think it is Slingerland. Those lugs look pretty pitted, you would have to put a fair amount of work into that snare to get in the $200 range.

Many thanks, most eruditous Slingy guys...

I'd have to agree with Kevins, seems to be most like a Hollywood Ace model.

Now I'm kind of curious about the tone control, but regardless, I'll not refer to it as original.

I'm so into my Camco drums and Way project kit (I can't even spell DW ;) ) that this snare drum is of no interest to me. I thought I'd clean it up a bit (polish the lugs, shell and rims) and offer it up for maybe $200 even.

I want to offer it for a fair price AND make sure I'm not ripping myself off!
