I'm sure others can confirm the ridiculous rarity of this configuration in MIJ stencils. The 16 has different, earlier Slingy lugs,so it's 12,13,18,24 w/chrome 5 1/2X14 10-lug snare.Battleship lugs and angled spurs,2 into 1 hex rod tom mount. There was an Apollo set on Ebay last year with that mount, but a standard 22 bass.I,personally have NEVER seen a 24 bass MIJ set in person. We got 20" 6 lug basses or 22" 8 luggers over here in the east.I did see a double bass Perussion Plus COW set with 24's,but it was MIT-approx date 1984.So I'd date this at around 1973.Later drums,MIT or MIJ had mostly switched to the diamond lugs. These would be in my garage if they was here in Mass.....

Anybody happen to notice what looks to be the original pseudo-Trixon bass pedal under the 18?

You are so right teverson-sr on this set.I have emailed the guy today trying to see if i can get more photo's of the set..His listing did say 9 ply shells with out rings so this would date the set in late 69 to 1973...I just hope i get this set if i was down in southern.ca that set would be with me now..But iam not home right now..I also have Never seen a 24" bass drum have seen many 16",18",20",22" but not a 24" bass...Mikey

Last year there was a black textured cortex kinda finish Apollo on C/L in St Louis and it was one of this era and also this size, 12-13-16-18-24 w/snare. Best I can tell is this is during the transition from Star to Pearl, so 73-75-ish would be about right. The one in St Lou is for sale still/again, in much better condition, for 350 and he is willing to ship, I believe. As I can't really see it all that well, are the lugs all Sound King, or are they the battleship/diamond type? They look like S/K to me, but the pix are the typical C/L quality. (looking again I see it has both style of lugs)

So, to answer who made this kit? I believe, and this is only my opinion, that these era transition kits were assembled by both Star and Pearl. Partially started at the Star factory and finished off at Pearl as they ended up with the contract for St Louis Music Supply, i.e. Apollo, Stewart, Polaris, Majestic....the list goes on.

In those days, it looks to me that not only was Star and Pearl in the fits of growth and negotiations, but that also the US distributors were growing/merging and becoming more "corporate" as we consider the types of conglomerations today.

We have to remember that business in these days was undergoing a complete transformation from family owned to large publicly held monsters that seem to have taken over the landscape of business as we know it today.

So, what happened to SLMS? I believe they have been swallowed by whatever monstrosity owns the now defunct CB, which is Kaman as we know it today. Again, just my opinion and theorization, but following the timelines and mergers and how corporate structure works, this is the most logical line to follow.
