60's Ludwig bpd downbeat snare on the way

Loading...

Always wanted a db snare for my 67 bop downbeat kit. Had to settle for the bdp. Only issue I know of is wrap lift at the seam. Told drum is all original other than heads and snare. Wanted to hear opinions on, should I keep it original or rewrap it in bop to match my kit? From left field most won't notice, but I like my drums to match. For now, I'll probably just glue it down. Next question would be what glue to use or can anyone recommend someone to do that work? Just looking for group feedback on how much a rewrap effects future value. Thanks.

I definitely wouldn't re-wrap it. Lowers value a lot on a snare that isn't as common as other models. I'd use it until one comes up in the right color, then re-sell it. Of course, that may be a while, no matter which OBP you need........marko

ORIGINAL BDP ~ rewrapping will kill value. (prices on OBP downbeat snares are greatly elevated; dear Ringo never played one so what gives? A JF is another matter entirely.)

Get under the lifted seam as much as possible - maybe even increasing area, especially if lifted section is SMALL, so that the CONTACT CEMENT you apply to both sides covers entire area, let sit at least 15 minutes, and then clamp for 24 hours.

From experience : practice clamping so you know what it's like - because you don't want to be figuring that out with the glue activated.

You can check Restoration section for others' recommendations.

Good luck!

If the wrap is wrapped into the lap joint on the shell it's going to be very hard to re wrap anyway. I had an 8x12" clubdate tom I had to plug and re wrap, and removing the wrap was really tough. Even harder was cutting the wrap out of the joint and putting the new wrap inside. If this drum doesn't have a giant 1" hole in the middle or some other issue I'd say no way.

Besides the new wrap will never match.

Thanks folks,

I did mean to say bdp as in black diamond pearl in the subject line, and chances are I'll repair rather than rewrap. Depending on how pristine the drum is, I may want to have the repair professionally done. Any recommendations? Thanks again.
