Thanks for the input Jeff, always glad to hear from you. And now that you mention it, veneer is probably the way to go on these.

I mentioned in another thread about the birch veneer available close to me. Long rolls, no need for seams on bass drum, and although it looks like some of the rolls have horizontal seams/joins, it would be totally fine for painting.

If I had the dough, the ginger glitter would be it, and I'd have Precision install it too. But I was remembering how good that DIY gold sparkle turned out [much better than it looks in the pics], and still toying with the idea of trying a silver sparkle. If I can get the sparkles sandwiched between two sheets of Dura-lar [preferably straw-tinted], with the Krylon glaze, and still pliant enough to wrap around the shells, I'd use the seam-taping-only method. Because wood gluing the rough [sparkle] side to the shell would leave an awful mess if I ever wanted to change it out...

[edit] I know what you mean about getting the shells smooth - tried it with some MIJ shells with the vertical grain...which I could never get to completely disappear.

Here are the [10] 12" single tension T-rods I have to trade for Club Date T-rods. They are completely complete, with the alignment thingies off the shell included. These are from around 1938, from the hand inscription on the inside of the BD shell. There are ten of them, not twelve as I had thought. I will need claws too. I only need eight rods and claws, for the one side.

I'll put them in the Trade section but thought I'd list em here first - a little more traffic lol.

I understand the Club Date rods might be more valuable, however I have no cash available to add to the deal, so if a trade can't be made I'll be cutting these down and re-threading them.....I think I've said that a hundred times now lol.

How do, Howdo! Pretty happy meself, despite some unwelcome surprises on closer inspection.

I picked this kit up two nights ago. The one BD hoop is plastic, and currently listed on kijiji for 10 bucks. I have two MIJ hoops of Big Four quality that I'll be using for a start. These hoops are top quality, thick and made of real wood, one of those aberrations one comes across with MIJ sometimes.

The one 12" tom, the unwrapped one, has too many gouges and one big one right at the vent hole, plus a big bulgy "repair" inside which would bother me just knowing it's there. The other 12" is painted black over sky blue pearl. This is a minor dilemma as I want to reveal the mahogany on all shells [see below re FT and BD], but don't want to pull good wrap off a drum. I'll either clean the paint off and use until someone wants to trade, or pretend the wrap is no good [possible] and *carefully* remove it. This wrapped tom has original white interior and a badge. Very good shell condition aside from the paint.

The FT and BD will look great after removal of black paint, not stain grade to be sure but awesome looking anyway. Minwax or linseed oil treatment and I will be very pleased I think.

The snare has those relocated lugs, all hardware moved over about an inch......whyyyyyy???!!! Oh well the parts are all good and up for trade [pics] for 8 BD rods and claws, and 6 FT rods. That's all I need.

More in a minute :)

Here's some pics of the snare shell. The wizard what moved all the lugs over was careful to mark everything with a pencil before wrecking the shell. Date-stamp "May 5 1965".

Removal of hardware reveals clean maple - my guess is it was a duco, and the black paint is pulling off whatever duco finish remained....or something. This shell is up for grabs, minus the badge, obviously for not too much. Again I am looking to trade for parts I need.

Here's a pic of an initial go with the orbital palm sander on the bass drum, right at the worst spot, with a big "repair". Outer ply is lifted at one end of the lug spot, probably due to being under high tension from just the batter side for a long time [it was tuned up high when I picked it up]. This is also where the shell was cracked, I think from the dreaded "person falling against the tom while it's mounted on the rail" scenario.

None of this bothers me lol. The shell is structurally sound and I'm an oil on canvas painter, so I can hide the putty reasonably well. I like aberrations anyway, antique looking stuff, and this fits the bill. So, for a while anyway, no veneering or wrapping for this kit.

First pic is my BD, second is from google, as an example of the kind of vibe I'm after.

Of note - this is a Ludwig bass drum shell with no extra holes, drilled only at the factory...and the lugs are closer to the batter side by a whole quarter of an inch!! Also the rail mount holes are placed so that the mount is crooked on the shell! One of these days I'm going to save up and get some Rogers drums :)

Thanks Jeff, me neither!

My hurdles are twofold - missing parts, and the fact it's cold here now so sanding outside is a drag and sanding inside is not fair to the housemate...I'll get her to tell me when she's going out for the day...:)

I usually can't resist the immediacy of the palm sander for exteriors. Thought about just painting white over the black interiors but will probably strip them, palm sander isn't so great for interiors. It'll feel better starting from the wood.

The FT interior actually has just a light, stupid coat of brown, like poop, because how could anyone resist? The BD interior is black but on both you can see the white's still there. So maybe I can get down to that layer and save it. How do you do that? Just a "lazy" strip job?

But generally yes I want to end up with 12 14 20 mahogany finish shells, white interiors. [edit] Sorry, mahogany "finish"...
