60s 16 lug Sonor snare repair

Loading...

This is a snare that blew out on me years ago and after some research I found out that Sonor made wierd size drums back in the 60's. The lugs probably won't work on a regular 14" shell (the shell size is 13 3/4"). I realize it's a pretty bad blow out but with a lot of glue (Gorilla Glue?) and alot of clamps it just may work. There is another hairline crack on the snare side as well (last pic). Am I nuts? If I could find a 60's Sonor shell that was made for 16 lugs like this one I'd probably buy it. If not I'll sell or trade the parts for some stuff to get another project started. I also have some other old Sonor parts off the toms and kick.

If anyone has any advice or has a trade or purchase idea let me know,

Todd

Sorry about the large pics!

Personally, I think you are in trouble on this one. If it was just the reinforcing ring that was split, I would say you have a chance but in your case the ring has actually pulled away the shell plies and broken the shell itself. So sonically, the bearing edge is no longer attached to the shell.

I think you should be open to experimentation with this repair. Go ahead with gorilla glue or whatever and even consider some small screws to hold it together. See what kind of sound you can get of it. If you can't get anything, you can wait for another shell or sell the hardware separately on e-bay.

This is a 60's era drum, 3 ply beach shell by the looks of it. I think that 8 lug (per side) drums in this configuration are pretty common.

Cheers.

Is the shell itself separated? Or just the reinforcement ring?

It looks like a simple matter of applying the Gorilla Glue and several spring clamps to hold the reinforcement ring securely in place for several days till it completely dries. I would put as many clamps as possible in that one area side by side. It'd be best to clean the area getting the glue just in case theres a heavy dust build up from storage. If the point of separation is the original glue seam it would make sense to remove the old glue from the area where the new glue will be applied if possible.

Also, if you've never used the Gorilla Glue before, know that it will expand and foam out from the area where it is applied. It would be good to put some wax paper or other shield between the clamps and the glue seepage.

That Gorilla Glue is strong stuff. I bet it will work. The success of the operation depends on how close to the original roundness it ends up being. I'm real curious to know what happenened with it? Nice drum and Good Luck!

Actually I have had some luck! The fix seems to be just fine. The roundness is good and the bearing edge looks straight. I had heard about the expanding gorilla glue and tried to keep an eye on it but I used some old painting stirrers to go between the clamps and I was unable to see all of the dripping going on! Live and learn I guess but I have had success in removing the access by carefully scraping and sanding. It will be a slow process but I'm in no hurry. I'm going to put on a couple of thin coats of Tung oil to help the old wood heal a bit after I've sanded the whole thing. I'll post pics of the finished job soon but for now here is some after clamping. As you can see I used PLENTY of clamps.

Oh, it was both the shell and the re-ring. I'm amazed at how well it turned out.

Thanks for your all's help!

Todd

Just a note on gorilla glue, read the diections on the bottle, dampen wood before applying. If you really soak the wood, the glue doesn't seem to swell as much. Good luck, Rick
