'58 Slingy WMP Radio King's

Loading...

I purchased and refurbished this kit several years ago. At the time I bought it it consisted of a '58 (stamped) 22" bass drum, '58 (stamped) 13" rack tom and mid-'60s 16" floor tom. All were in pretty filthy condition, but functionally and structurally very sound. The bass drum came with Rogers mounts in lieu of Slingerlands. They must have been custom-ordered by the original owner because there are absolutely no extra holes in the BD shell.

Ever since I purchased the kit my goal was to someday find the matching late '50s floor tom so that I could replace the mid-'60s FT that came with the kit. Little did I realize how challenging that would become. The ones I found were either considerably out of my price range or in terrible condition. Just when I was about to give up on the idea of finding one I noticed exactly what I was looking for on Atlanta CL. I ended up purchasing the drum from Mr. Deacon Washington, a New Orleans drummer now living and working in the Atlanta area.

Upon receipt of the floor tom I stripped all the hardware and gave both the wrap and metal a good cleaning and polishing. I'm extremely happy with the results and how nicely the WMP matches my other two drums.

I currently use a '51 Leedy & Ludwig green glass glitter snare with custom maple hoops when I play the kit or one of my Luddy supras. Who knows...maybe one day I'll actually find the matching '58 WMP Slingy Radio King. Never say never, I guess!

Very nice! I already miss my '58 Slingerland kit, but I got an awesome RK kit in trade. Don't give up on your search for a late 50s WMP RK. I saw one on feeBay not long ago. It went for several hundred, though.

I love your kit. Those old drums from the 50's sound warmer.

You DO want to find a matching Radio King snare. I picked up one last Saturday. I think it is from 1956. It is my new favorite snare!

1964 Leedy Ray  Mosca kit in Blue Sparkle
1959 Slingerland Super Gene Krupa snare in WMP

1965 Acrolite snare
Ludwig Coliseum snare
'68 Rogers Dynasonic snare
Pearl free floating piccolo snare
13" Mapex piccolo snare
6.5" deep Mapex steel snare

I know there's more snares than that.

Hey Old School...nice kit! At first I thought my kit was a '58, but realized it was a '57 due to the old Radio King hardware that it came with. I suppose it could even be a '56. I was lucky enough to find it in fantastic shape with the floor tom and matching 1-ply snare. As Rastus mentioned...you definitely DO want to find the matching snare...sounds incredibly awesome!
