50's WFL restoration - Duco?

Loading...

Hello boys and girls, here is my latest project! Just got it off the UPS truck. I'm thinking either WMP wrap or blue/silver duco. ENJOY!

That appears to be a homemade Duco, not the real deal.

I would strip a section of paint off to see what was under there originally. Jonni is absolutely correct - re-painted at some time. Might be something interesting under there.

Great project kit.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Yeah obviously a crappy repaint at some point. I was merely referring to my plans. It was duco at one point you can see it on some parts of the drum but somebody decided baby blue and gold were better than the blue/silver. Toying with a WMP wrap like a lot of the 50's WFL kits had but, I always like a challenge. All the nickel hardware is there and functional so it should be a nice money maker kit!

I think drummaker.com has a pretty close WMP wrap. I've heard it is probably the closest looking to original wrap. If I am wrong somebody let me know.

You can strip down the paint and those should have natural maple underneath. A good friend of mine its been doin that for while and after aplying a couple of laquer hands he always sells them good... They look amazing! Think about it: cheaper, easier and the results are as goodFYI as any other finish...

I saw those on 3bay-and I'd have to agree that back to natural maple is the way to go.The best bass drum I ever owned was the same as that one, single tension and all. Those are outstanding drums-yes I'm jealous.

Prolly should measure first and see if they are full to the inch in diameter. If they are, a wrap job might put you in the heads-too-tight scenario.

To avoid removeing then reinstalling the badges,..I`d go with the natrual wood finnish.
