50's Slingerland Set - Pricing Help Needed

Loading...

I am sure someone out there knows more on these than any of my local friends. My dad is looking to sell his vintage Slingerland drum set. Does anyone know what a set like that is worth?

Here's roughly what I can tell. The black and copper Chicago badge leads me to believe it is a 1956-1959 and the color appears to be Black Diamond Pearl. Minus a few small parts, everything appears to be there. The cymbals are not labeled, but there are stands with cymbals with the set.

Any help would be appreciated. He is attempting to sell it locally and doesn't want to give it away or ask too much for it.

I do have more pictures, or at least I can take more. What were you looking for me to photograph (please be specific if you can)? It does come with a snare drum.

Also, in regards to the measurements, 13, 16 and 22 - 14 on the snare. Could you tell me what K's are, then maybe I could answer that question for you.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, that's what I'm hoping to gain on here.

Nice old kit! I'm a little partial to old Slingies since that's what I've got myself.

I don't think they're jazz sizes. The 20" bass on my '56 Slingerland kit has 8 lugs. The drum in the pic has 10.

There's some more info you'll need to provide to get a more accurate appraisal:

What size are the drums? Measure the diameter of the shell, not counting the metal hoop.

Does the kit include a snare drum? What kind? Single-ply Slingerland Radio King snares can be quite valuable. To see if that's what you might have, you'll want to provide some close-up pictures of the snare drum, particularly the snare mechanism. (And besides, we like looking at 'em.) :)

Look really closely at the top side of the cymbals to see if you can find any marks stamped into them, as well as irregular dimples that could indicate the cymbal was hand-hammered. Since certain cymbals (like the old Zildjian K's Jonni hinted at) can be worth quite a bit of money, it's worth getting a positive ID. Again, good pics would be helpful.

Have any extra holes been drilled in the drums for new mounting hardware or whatever? Drums that haven't been altered carry a price premium.
...and possibly the most important question if you're trying to sell locally: Where are you? You could probably get a good return if you're in a major metro area, but here in rural Podunk, there's not much of a market for vintage drums.

Thanks, very helpful. I'll get pics of the snare right now. I don't see alterations, they've sat around for years. Even in the old cases. As for the area, near Cleveland Ohio.

I'll add pics in a few minutes are check back in the morning. Thanks for everyone's help, I wasn't sure where to turn.

After a closer look, the cymbals do say Zildjian Co. on them. Can't get a good pic of those with the name on it though, maybe a better camera would work?

in this economy, the kit and all the accessories i see it realistically selling for at the lowest 2,000 or damn close to it and not a penny lower, topping off in the low 3's if u find the right buyer. my humble opinion. love the set!D' Drummer

Thanks for the extra pics!

We can only see the bottom of the snare, but it looks like it might be a Radio King with a "clamshell" strainer. Or technically a "Super Gene Krupa" since Slingerland dropped the Radio King name for a few years in the late 1950s and early '60s. If so, that's a good thing -- those solid maple snares are sought-after. To confirm, does it look like one of the drums at the top of this 1959 catalog page?

Talking a little more about the cymbals, old Zildjians can be valuable in their own right and you may want to consider selling them separately. They probably wouldn't fetch as much when sold as a "throw-in" with the drum set. (I'd never advocate breaking up a vintage drum set, but cymbals are typically considered an add-on item, not part of the set itself.) To help you identify your cymbals more accurately, check out this page with Zildjian stamps over the years. You can approximate a Zildjian cymbal's age by its stamp and certain eras hold more cachet with collectors. The other thing you'll want to figure out is whether each cymbal is an "A" or a "K". The K's are generally more valuable and can be identified by their prominent hand-hammering, which will show up as irregular dents or ripples in the cymbal's surface. Check out the very bottom picture on the Zildjian stamp timeline page for an example of what a K looks like.

As for the kit's dollar value... I don't buy or sell many kits, so I'm not the most qualified appraiser, but if you're patient enough to find a buyer, I think roundbadgedude's $2000 assessment is in the right ballpark, especially if you sell the cymbals separately. Drums, hardware, cases, accessories... The completeness adds to the collector value.
