50-70s German snare?

Loading...

Hey all! I have got hold of a seemingly 1950s-70s (GDR?) snare, 12.5" x 6", in an aged white pearl wrap (see attached photos). I'm interested to confirm the manufacturer, as there is no logo. Does anyone recognise the model? I'd appreciate if anyone was able to confirm anything about it - e.g. materials, history, specific restoration advice.

It was advertised as Trowa, and I have found a similar model being advertised by a Dutch drum shop: http://drumshop.peterdoest.nl/?product=trowa-snardrum . However, there isn't much supporting information!

There seem to be original wires (mostly in shape), dampener, heads (pretty clean), lugs etc. Sadly the shell looks slightly warped, but the wrap seems tight, I'll have to take it apart and see what the damage is.

Tom :)

I'd really appreciate any guidance, does anyone know who on the forum might know more about this kind of drum? Sorry for the bump!

Very neat looking snare!! I like the offset lugs...I`m thinking that you are on the right path with Trowa...Maybe Tromsa...

Try contacting father_42...He should be able to assist you...

Cheers

Hi Tom and Welcome!

It's not Trowa snare.

I suppose that Grantro nailed it about Tromsa - strainer type and lugs tells us about that.

Also we can think about another Tromsa brands - Luxor, Lindberg, Roxy & etc.

Cheers,

George.

Thanks so much both, great to hear back from you!

Really interesting to hear that you both immediately think that it isn't a Trowa, looking forward to doing some research into Tromsa (and similar brands) to find out more - I had not heard of it until now!

It is a shame, the drum looks quite similar to some other ~60s Sonor snares, but the build quality looks worlds apart. Any idea on what kind of age the drum might be? I assume it is still GDR-built.

Hi Tom,

It's not so hard to find a bunch of interesting threads on VDF pages about Tromsa drums -- you will be convinced that your nice snare drum is really Tromsa from Hamburg but not Weißenfels.

Cheers,

George.
