5 piece cellar dweller for ...$5.00

Loading...

Hello Drum folks,

I have here the buy of the week

I answered a Craig's List ad for a "slightly dusty" five piece drum kit

with an asking price of only fifty dollars.

I pulled up the driveway and these were the drums

along with the dust that was mentioned in the ad ...but then all the rest too

I said "these drums are junk", because that was what they were

They had been down in that cellar just a tad too long

He asked "well are they worth anything"

I said "yes five bucks not fifty"

At the same time I started looking at them

and noticed the kit was made up of a combination of both Tama and Pearl

or some sort of knockoff components of the two

Note the Tama style bass drum mount receiver and double tom mounting arm

with the corresponding mounting brackets on the two deep very Tama-like mounted tom shells.

While the 10 lug bass drum has Pearl style folding spurs and all the drums are fitted with standard Pearl lugs

There is not one single component on any of the drums

that has not been affected by the long neglected life down in that cellar

I had never seen that combination of tama /pearl before ..and I am always game for a challenge drum-wise

Which is why I gave the guy the five bucks and loaded them up

I actually paid a total of ten bucks

But I figured the wall hanger saxophone he threw in was worth the extra fin ................Kenwood

Those are pretty cool for $5. A challenge yes but will be a nice kit when done. The sax is nice too! You'd be surprised how many schools discard old instruments that need parts and or repairs!

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

The kit does have tin rectangular badges

affixed by two small nails to each shell they read isa's

which I found zero information on so far

Hello FFR428

Thank you for the reply

Yes I was thinking they were pretty cool for five bucks as well

I have started the process of turning a lemon into a peach

My game plan is use all the existing components

Rusty and dusty though they may be

I may make only one exception and that would be the bass drum hoops

Only as I have some hanging around that would be better

I started with the worst drum ..the bass

I stripped it of all hardware breaking only two of the lug casings in the process.

I then removed all the black wrap material

and cleaned what may have been a not so recently vacated mouse motel

at the bottom inside of the drum

No matter how carefully I tried, I was not able to get the wrap free of the glue strips without some splintering of the outer ply of the Asian mahogany

Likewise with all the other shells

which since they had all the beat up heads still intact were much cleaner inside after being peeled of the wrap

It was not an option to save the wrap as it was split in several places

and just beat to death

I also completely disassembled the snare drum

Man what a mess I made of my work area ...anyway that is how they sit so far

What's the Brand? Rust on Rust?;)

That will keep you busy for a while.

Hello PopsOldSkins

Thank you for the reply

LOL yes indeed there is more rust than there is chrome

That is for sure and yes they will keep me out of trouble for a spell

This will be a sort of rat resto at best

Since the rust is so very bad ..I am thinking of painting as my only option

I would like to get some input about that

I do have some better hoops and legs and many other replacement parts

but that won't be any fun using them

I like the idea of using all the existing stuff

the hoops, spurs, floor tom legs, tom mount and receiver, and the claws, (all heavily rusted) I am hoping to have them sand blasted depending on the cost ..if not I will clean them best as possible with brillo and/or wire brush on bench grinder.

What do you all think about using Rust-Oleum ??

SOAK SOAK SOAK......then yes, perhaps painting would be your best option. Are you going to re-warp or paint the shells? Contact paper? Wall paper? If you paint the hardware, what color? Black is just way too common - consider something else (my vote).

That is a killer deal - no matter what you do with what. That sax and Camco pedal makes it a great score already!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Hello John,

Thank You for the reply

Soak them in what do you recommend ?.

I was not thinking of re-wrapping either paint or poly or something thereabouts.

if I were to re-wrap them, I might be tempted to try the upholstery vinyl

but more than likely just stain or paint

The Camco pedal is a Tam-co version with a small piece broken from the footboard and with moderate rusting

The distressed sax is very cool and I will enjoy looking up at it

on the wall in the shop here

as for color of hardware ..I was leaning heavily toward black though red popped into my head also Thanks Man..^5's

I would try soaking a few of the smaller parts in vinegar and see what happens. It may take several hours or even days to have a significant effect.

I have also had good success rubbing with a wad of aluminum foil and soda pop but I've never tried with any parts as rusty as those.
