I know the 3 ply BD and Toms are a lot thinner and can't really be cranked too high for tuning, but what about the wooden snares? Looking at one of the split lug, big mallet logo snares and wondering how much different it will sound than a D-471 from the late '60s, early '70s. Anyone have experience with both?

Hi Jay,
I don't have any experience of the D-471, but I do have a D-421. I recently posted pics of it here:

This is an early teardrop era wooden snare drum which is contamporary with the 3 ply kits. The snare drum, however, is single ply. It can take higher tensions, but probably not dead tight.
It is a very sensitive drum - quite like the 3 ply kits. Despite its age and wear, my specimen sounds great and is a true pleasure to play.
