30's Ludwig&Ludwig Pioneer white question

Loading...

Hello everybody,

this is my first post Clapping Happy2

Yesterday i bought two snares at ebay. One is a all original Leedy&Ludwig from '54 and the other is a Ludwig&Ludwig pioneer from the 30's. The seller states, that it is a brass shell with a white kind of enamel coating. It has NOB single-flanged hoops with clips. The top hoop is engraved: L&L, Elkhart, Indiana. I never saw one of these and i'm hoping somebody can tell me something about it. I looked up the resources at the internet, which i know, but couldn't find any other information.

Thanks for your help!

Nice drum. The Pioneer was a mid level drum; not top of the line, but above the student level 6 lug models. (In the 1960s, the Ludwig used the name Pioneer for their 6 lug wooden student model snares.)

Not sure if the muffler on your drum is original or if it was added later. Also, near it seems to be a hole, possibly from a light bulb / heater.

If the hoops are original, it would date the drum from the later '40s. Even though Ludwig drums were made in Elkhart soon after their purchase by Conn in around 1930, they didn't put Elkhart on the badges until the 1940s.

Thanks for the insides!

On the vintagesnaredrums.com-site it's said that this badge is from the 30's (what confirms the seller, who thought it's from around 34/35)?!

I'll get both drums next thursday. Here are some pics of the Leedy&Ludwig:

I think the Pioneer usually had straight hoops, as opposed to ones with a flange like the ones on your drum, so it's possible that those hoops were changed out at some time.

Those Leedy Ludwig snares are great. I have one in BDP that's my "go to" wooden snare drum.

Yesterday both drums arrived.

The Leedy & Ludwig is a real killer!!! It came with a new Aquarian Vintage drum head. I never played such a good vintage drum before. I'm absolutely thrilled!

The Ludwig & Ludwig tunes up like a charm and sounds fantastic (and i don't consider myself a "metal" guy). It came with a Fiberskin head, which is not my favourite snare head though. I'll try a Aquarian vintage or a Remo renaissance later.

Overall both drums are in incredible good state (considering one 54 years old and the other around 75 years old). Everything works perfectly they look great and they sound as good as they look. No extra holes on the Ludwig & Ludwig and the muffler seems to be original.

Wow, i'm so happy with it!

Holy cow them's some nice drums schlagsaite. The Leedy & Ludwig looks new! Amazing. The white over brass is stock on your Pioneer? Curious how that shell compares with the brass '20's six lug L&L I have. Any idea?

Thanks for your kind words!

The white emerald finish was stock on this drum.

The drums came from a very old collector and are in incredible good shape.

I've never tried the 20's brass myself.

This information was given by Mr Noonan of Noonandrums: "The Pioneer is from around `30-early 30s, rolled brass shell, enamel finish..Hoops stamped Elkhart, badge stamped Chicago..."
