20" bass head choice on MIJ

Loading...

I have a 6 lug mij bass drum. I'd like a low thunk sound out of the drum. Can anyone recommend a drum head for it?

Thanks in advance!

EMAD single ply works for me on my MIJs. (Rock/pop)

coated emperor batter and coated ambassador reso. experiment with felt strip for right amount of muffling. I got me a huge boom out of a 6 lug MIJ bass drum this way. But that was a very thin shell with re-rings.

If you have a straight shell, I'd change the emperor for a coated ps3.

I'm running a coated emperor w/ the falam slam patch on a straight shell, couple small towels inside for dampening & a ported fiberskyn 3 for the reso. We're getting louder now, so the towels may have to come out and a ps3 may be in order!

Try an Ambassador Powerstroke. Heard one on an 18" bass in a drum shop the other day and it sounded mighty.

I always use Aquarian SKI - and either an Evans EQ3 or EQ4 on the front (with port hole). But sometimes for the front I just use a Remo Amb (or whatever clean white head I have around) on front and install my own port hole and muffle with white weatherstripping.

NOTE: Do NOT waste your money on an Aquarian SKII. I once had to try to make one work on a mid 60s Slingerland 20in BD, and it just was not working at all! I was VERY familiar with what an SK was supposed to sound like, and it was easily conclusive that the 2nd ply was the culprit. ALWAYS go with a SINGLE ply SKI.

I even have seen this SKI on a little 16in BD - and it sounded awesome.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!
