1983 Yamaha Tour Series

Loading...

Hey guys!

I believe I picked up a 1983 Yamaha Tour series drum set (birch/mahogany combo shells). As far as my research has shown, the finish is "natural wood". The drums are double badged and all say MADE IN JAPAN on the badges (not made in taiwan like I have seen on some of these kits).

This kit is going to be B E A utiful when its finished, but heres the issue: I need a 22 inch hoop (one has been replaced). Does anyone know where on earth something like this might be attainable? These seem to be somewhat rare compared to say the run of the mill vintage parts for American drums. I was thinking worst case I could just replace both hoops with something close that match...but ideally Id find a correct one.

Sizes are:

14x22

8x10

8x12

9x13

16x16

Also, have any of you dudes had any experience with this series? I hear they are amazing sounding professional drums that can be very desirable in the studio world...but I havent actually heard them yet. Im excited to clean and wax the shells up. Theres basically no rust on anything....just insanely dirty and some character marks/scratch stuff that should fill in nicely. It does however look like someone blew cig smoke on it at point blank range for the past 30 years. Looking forward to cleaning that off. Kleening

Here are some pics. Any ideas on how I might go about finding a hoop AND any opinions/experience with this series of drums would be much appreciated! They are new to me!

Also just picked up a weird 70's Pearl Fiberglass concert tom kit today. Im a MIJ magnet lately!

Yeah those shells are gorgeous as it is. A little TLC and they'll be stunners.

Im not super into putting $75-$100 in new hoops into these.

I know I could buy keller hoops and finish them myself and all that, but I guess what Im asking is if anyone has some old maple or birch...natural colored hoops laying around that they want to get rid of for cheap OR better yet the correct hoop to match this one I have, or maybe you could point me in the direction of someone who might have something like that laying around. I don't have "an 80's Yamaha guy" if you know what Im saying!

Oh man! Im loving it! This should probably just go in the restoration thread. If the moderator feels like moving it, I understand!

I disassembled everything and the chrome is amazing. I cleaned the shells with murphy's and then did a paste wax on them. Check out the family picture below and then the 8x10 finished.

This kit is going to be amazing!

Gads! Those are gorgeous Adam!

Are you sure you want to flip those? How do they sound?

NO IM NOT SURE!

They are sounding fantastic. I need to get some real heads for them, but the one drum that I had heads for (the 10) sounds amazing.

I don't have the other hoop for the bass drum yet, but I did have some laying around that will work for now.

Check it out!

The finish is called Dark Wood in the US and Japan.

Nice drums. Love that build.
