1982-83 Ludwig Classics

Loading...

I have a good dilemma--a Slingerland kit and a Ludwig kit that are very similar in size, and more kits than I need overall. I probably need to sell one of them. I have a pretty good idea of the value of my Slingerlands, but I'm less sure of my Ludwig kit. It's a circa '82 set of Classics in white cortex wrap, 6-ply, with the modular hardware. Sizes are 16x24 kick, 16x18 floor tom, 12x13 8-lug rack tom, and 13x14 10 lug rack tom. No issues with any shells, hardware, or finish (that stuff's indestructible). These things sound great, and the extra two inches of depth (14" versus 16") really give the edge in boom to the Ludwig over the Slingerland.

I've attached a few photos I snapped with my phone while I was cleaning the BD hardware and putting on a new batter head. They're obviously not great quality but I hope they'll give you an idea of the shape they're in. Any thoughts on fair market value for the four-piece set?

Nobody? Nothing? All right, I'll put a guess out: $500.

Glued. Proud to be grommet-free.

tough sell ... but not as impossible as it would have been had they not been glued! so ...

white cortex = not very desirable

modular hardware = not very desirable

deep shells = not very desirable

large size ludwig drums = very cool

6 ply = hit or miss

wow ... this one is tough to pin down. if you hit a banger just right, you could actually do pretty good. if not, you would be very lucky to get 400 for the kit. tough tough tough. man, if you do get lucky and time it just right for a banger seeking one of these, you could hit 800. no joke. dang tough one. good luck, for sure.

I know! It's a tough one. To further muddy the waters, a local sale would be good because the drums sound great and look better in person than they do in pix. Plus they're heavy as metal, so shipping's a bear. But it's a small pool to draw from in Mississippi. So I could cast the net wide via an online auction, but it could be a long wait if i set a reserve or B-I-N, or a low low selling price if I don't. And whoever buys it has to figure in the even higher than usual shipping cost.

This is probably the universe's way of telling me I should just keep both kits. Of course, if I do that I'm'a be tempted to rewrap in green glitter ... plug the modular holes and ... and ...

been there. i had a 6 ply in classic sizes with modular hardware. it was a horribly beat up old maple finish. i worked it to an acceptable finish. i then wrapped them in large chip ludwig wmp using the tape method ... just in case someone wanted to put them back to maple. i played them for a while and enjoyed them. then, someone wanted just the shells. i purchased some 3 ply shells and transferred the lugs to that kit, sold the modular hardware, and sold the shells to that single someone looking for those sizes. that's generally frowned upon, but the shells original finish was toast. the natural maple was banged and gouged and beat up bad. originality was thrown out the window as this kit was never going to make it back to factory. it worked for me. maybe you will find that person looking for these shells. you never know.
