1980s Pearl Maple Fiberglass free-floating snare!

Loading...

Many here know that I love Pearl President drums with their phenolic shells. But over the last few years I have become acquainted more and more with vintage Pearl maple-fiberglass drums. These drums were part of the Giant Step Artist series or GAX line. Unfortunately, the amazing sound quality of these drums is no secret here in Japan and they don't come cheap.

I have one 14x6 maple-fiberglass snare that I scored as a shell only- I re-lugged it and put on an after market strainer. I did manage to find original vintage die-cast Pearl hoops for it. Everyone mentions how great it sounds. So when I saw this vintage Pearl free-floating maple-fiberglass 14x6.5 on auction here I really jumped- score! I suggest keeping your eyes out for these drums- play one and hear what I am talking about- it's the sound that speaks for itself. Enjoy pics!Excited

I suspect that the original die-cast hoops have been changed out for these Pearl Superhoops.... I'll keep my eyes out for a set of 80's Pearl die cast hoops to put back on her.Sumo Dude

No mention of Maple-fiberglass shell available as a free-floating snare in 87 US catalog-

The GAX series was not available in the US, but was Maple-Fiberglass shells and shown in Pearl Japan catalogs from 1979-1986.

I was in Japan in 1991; bought some new Pearl Fiberglass toms that trip.

Guttenburg, thanks for that- I saw in one US catalog a listing for "dynamic wood" - I was wondering if that could have been an attempt at selling maple-fiberglass in the US?... Just my imagination running away.

Anyway, US drum freaks need to keep eyes out for these- the sound is almost like an effect- body, with a pleasant ringing overtone that decays quickly.joy.
