I came across this set and from my research i would say it should be a set from the 80's? Do you think 300$ would be a good deal considering it's apparent condition?
1980's Pearl drums?
Looks more like late 1970's to me, but I'm no expert in Pearl.....probably worth about half that though....not much value to early Pearl drums in these parts....
Yes, they look to be in great shape. Plus, that snare is probably COB. And those badges put that kit to be no later than 1979. Any idea what the shell are made of?
I'm pretty sure that Pearl from back then were still Luan shells.....but I could be wrong.....that snare doesn't look like the Jupiter model, so it probably isn't COB....more likely just a steel snare....
I assumed it's from the 80's because as far as I saw in the 70's catalogues all the sets had the toms mounted individually on the kick drum. Now I am to decide on buying this set or the Ludwig set from my other post. The price is more or less the same. As far as my tastes go I tend to prefer the Ludwigs but I would like to hear your advice.
I'd go for the Ludwigs any day.....they are better made, sound better, and will always be worth more in the collector market than Pearl. If you can afford the Ludwigs, then I say go for it!
I went today and saw the Ludwigs (to Ludwig-dude - please check out my post regarding that set) and I must say that these Pearls are by far in a better shape. I will have to give it some more thought.
That pearl set to me looks from 1979--81 or so..I would not waste money on the set..PEARL sets from 70s-80s are sh** drums, maybe that set is 100.00 150.00 maybe..mike
Saw both your posts. You don't mention what exactly you're looking for. Are you looking for drums to play right now or are you willing to wait until you get them back together? Do you need a player kit or a collector? Between these two sets, if you're looking for a player and not concerned about value, I think you'd go great with these Pearls. Offer $200 and I'd think that would be close to fair.
As for those Luddies, they're going to need a lot of work it looks like. Personally, if the wrap looks restorable, I'd take 'em for $150-$200 to have a psych red kit. If the wrap is trashed, I think I'd walk. (The idea of a "homemade" tom mount bothers me. LOL) Yeah, they're great drums, but they've been modified already, it seems, so I think it would be pretty easy to get upsidedown in this kit if they need rewrapped.
Thanks to all for the replies. I would want the set to have a collectible value and to also be played if / when the situation allows it. I decided to forget the Pearls and try to get a good deal on the Ludwig shells so that I could try to restore a good kit in time.
