I wanted to know if this is really a 79" drum set and if its a mahogany wood finish.

Based on the graph under "serial numbers" in the "Vintage Drum Identification" section on this site 19x,xxx serial number might put you a little earlier than 1979.

Seems really blond to be mahogany.. I see a maple finish after 1976 in the book.. but I'm not a wood expert.

If I was buying it, I would be confident it was a mid 70's set.

Not a Guru... just interested..

Hey,

I don't think that's a Mahogany finish. I have a Slingerland 71 Mahogany finish kit and it's WAY darker than yours. I'm looking at the finishes offered in 79 and 80 and am thinking it might be Maple or Oakwood......or something else. Tough call. It looks ok for the year (from what my meager skills can see). There are others on this site that can nail this a bit better than me.

Guaranteed not mahogany (I did actually major in wood in college.. . Guitar Dude Man )

Probably maple, could be birch or something else, but I'd guess maple.

I would say ...what everyone else said. Might be a few years earlier than '79 based on Serial #...definitely NOT mahogany, likely maple. Slingy, to my knowledge, never used birch....

Judging by the bass shell, that's a 3-ply re-ring kit. And it looks like monster sizes. That's a pretty cool old kit (except for the snare....which just shouldn't be teamed up with that kit).
