Hi everyone! I have an opportunity to get a 1979. Ludwig, restored in red sparkle. The shell is 5 or 6 ply (not sure), but I'm wondering what wood is it made of, maple? Or cheaper poplar? The set also has some odd sizes: 22x14, 12x8, 13x9, 15x12, 16x14, what's up with that? Is the set any good? I don't need it to be collectible, I just want a great sounding vintage kit for myself :) Thanks!

Here's the picture, and I also noticed that lugs on large toms are smaller! Anyone?

I don't think it's a factory kit, maybe custom ordered, or bastardized from others. The closest factory kit in that era had more drums, but different sizes. The 16 x 14 is the oddball, the 22 x14, 12 x 8 and 13 x 9 are normal sizes, maybe the 22,12 and 13 were from one kit, and the other two from another. 15 x 12 was a common size with the 70's-80's rock kits, but the 16 x 14 might have been a concert tom converted. Which would explain the lug differences.

Cool, thanks :) Still, I'm not buying it, since the guy already sold the kit, it was a matter of hours! Damn...
