1976 Ludwig Rock Machine, curious as to worth

Loading...

While I don't plan on selling this kit anytime soon/ever (if at all possible), was curious at to it's worth. Here's the info I put up and learned from the others after making a general thread about it a while ago, found here.

1976 Ludwig Rock Machine, maple cortex wrap, 3-ply with clear maple interior

Ludwig blue/olive badge

Mounted toms- 9.5" x 13"(1077914) and 10.5" x 14" (1040870), 6 lugs

Floor tom- 16" x 18" (1075832), 8 lug

Bass- 16" x 24" (1077362), 10 lug

came with 3 Ludwig straight stands that appear to be evenly aged (2 match, but one has a different wingnut and some other parts vary), but do not match the stands seen in this catalog

Pics:

Back view

Lower view, can see the holes a bit

Close up

Damages:

-the tom mounts in general do not hold very strongly at any of the joints (needs some memory lock/tape fiddling plus cloth to lean the toms on to make em playable)

-one of the cymbal stands does not hold when you extend the top half (sits lowered completely as a ride stand for now)

-there are small holes drilled into each of the toms, 2 each

-bass drum spurs have been replaced with the newer "Rocker" type spurs, leaving holes where the old curved spurs were mounted

-some heavy wear on a bass hoop clamp screw(guess a tom was leaning on it?) and on a tom mount (overtightened?)

-some rust buildup on the hoops, mounts, and clamps

-bass drum hoop rash

Thanks for the help!

Hmm, so I was fiddling with tuning yesterday and figured for the heck of it I would measure the shell thickness... turns out they are 7.5mm so I guess that makes them 6-ply. Not sure on any other details, though (I'm assuming still maple/poplar combo).

I can see that the bass drum is a 3-ply shell by the reinforcement rings at the ends of the shell. The 6-ply shells do not have reinforcement rings -only the 3-ply shells do. So, if all the other shells have the re-rings, then they are all 3-ply shells. And I would almost bet on it.

By the way....The holes in the toms are there for the tone controls -which have obviously been removed. You should be able to find some fairly easily. There are people here who sell such parts. Forum member "vadrums" is one such person. "mlvbs" is another. You don't absolutely have to have them and, in fact, they often rattled unless people took some measures to prevent that from happening. That's likely why they were removed to begin with.

The good news is that the holes were made at the factory and not done as some strange owner's experiment -as is often the case with extra holes.

Can you provide some photos on the interiors of the toms?

While I wasn't able to pull up a pic of the drums, I did take a quick look and noticed that the toms do have just the reinforcement rings (like this pic), so at the edge where I measured it's 7.5 mm but the drums are all 3-ply like you had said.

Not sure why I didn't notice that before >.< .

As for the holes, good to know that they are factory! I figure I'll probably forego finding replacement tone controls, especially if they were a bit of a hassle to play with.

Thanks so much!

Not sure how much this helps, but a floor tom with the same construction (same year even!) sold recently on ebay.

It has the tone control and no rust or anything, but it is missing other parts and has some wrap damage. Otherwise it is fairly similar to the kit.

I remember now too that the previous-previous owner had said something about the whole kit (with the extra stuff it came with) being worth about a thousand+. Now, I'm not sure how knowledgable he was but judging from what the tom sold for that seems fairly reasonable for the overall value of just the shells + 3 stands... but as I'm sure is apparent I don't really have much of a clue xP. Can't believe the cute lil thing I managed with the reinforcement rings haha. :(
