1976 Ludwig Red Sparkle - Info?

Loading...

Hi everyone.

I picked up this 3 piece red sparkle, blue/olive badge Ludwig, 20" kick, 13" and 16" toms (see photos).

The 16" tom and 20" kick have a clear interior finish whilst the 13" tom has the granite coated interior. Based on the serial numbers, this looks like a 1976 kit.

Can any of you Ludwig experts out there tell me any more about this kit? Thanks.

Those chrome plates go on the *outside* of the shell for the rail mount. I think the granitone should be on the rings so they might have been redone. Amazing how those B/O badges get all messed up with the wrap around them still looking fine.

Nice kit, others will know more...

The Bass drum is around 1972 cause it has a 949XXX serial # and the tom and floor tom I'd say are around 1974/75.

I don't use the Ludwig dating guide in the Ludwig book or on the vintage site. I use the one from Richard E. Giers book which is more accurate.

The lugs are all held on, not with screws but will small hex headed bolts (you can see them in the photos at the top of this thread). Does anyone know if these would be original or changed out later? Thanks.

Those are original. You should be able to get them off with 10mm socket, if I remember correctly.

Currently looking for a 3-ply 24x14 Ludwig in champagne sparkle w/rail consolette and cymbal mount!
