I saw a 1971 pearl fiberglass drum set light tan i color at a Ma and Pap drum shop for $400.00 The sizes are 12, 13, 16 and 24. Are these valuable or desireable and are they worth tha asking price? The set appeared to be all original and in excellent condition.
1971 pearl fiberglass
It's a fair price, actually.
But no...although not common anymore....they aren't desirable on the market. Some folks on eFlay occasionally try: "RARE, RARE Pearl fiberglass-shell drum set !!!".....but nobody's gonna chase that rabbit.....
Reason being, they kinda sucked. The shells were thin and the bearing edges were very poorly shaped. I suppose if they were re-edged they could be something...but...yuck...trying to rout then sand fiberglass ?....count me out of that affair.
So they continue to be a bit of a conversation piece more than anything of value....

Thanks Jaye I appreciate the reply.:p
I have to disagree on the simple "they suck" comment. If thy are 1971 Pearl Presidents then in Japan that kit is worth about 600$
The fiberglass Pearl President series in a very thin fiberglass that is dark brown in color. The thinness of those shells is a big + not a detriment. My Presidents are thin fiberglass shells and nice razor sharp bearing edges- perfect actually. It is unlikely those fiberglass drums you mention are anything but Presidents - as I think that Presidents were the only fiberglass offering in 1971. Later in the 70s Pearl made a cheaper and thicker shelled fiberglass drumset that was student priced that I dislike- the fiberglass is very different from the Preidents- it`s thicker and a yellow color. I also don`t think a non-President 24" fiberglass bassdrum was offered back then. I have a President 16x24" bass drum that is enormous sounding- a perfect drum.
The Pearl fiberglass President series is one of the true undiscovered diamonds of drum history- the sound is similar to Tempus and Fibes in quality- and it`s an amazing part of MIJ history.

I am talking thin-shell F'glass.
The edges I have seen are all crappy, seriously...very poorly fashioned....sorta square with a small bevel. Not nice and sharp, very flat, actually. They weren't from a President set.
On this side of the pond, a good President wouldn't get up to $600, maybe $450 tops. Your kit looks pretty cool, BTW.
As I said, with a recut they would improve the sound...but fiberglass is messy and icky to rout....
I understand and agree- the cheaper Pearl fiberglass drums do not excite me.
I have written this before- but after the classic President fiberglass kits- the Pearl Maple/Fiberglass kits are my #2 favorites. These two series President and then Maple/Fiberglass (not wood/fiberglass!) - these are the best Pearl made before it went to fine woods.

The Pearl Fiberglass I am familiar with is indeed the yellow interiors but I have to differ with you about the sound. Listen to any 70s recording of Steve Gadd. He played them and they are incredible. The shell material is very thin compared to wood but it is still more wood-like in its tonality than vistalite is, and it is lighter in weight than wood yet extremely durable.
My first pro grade set was a set of Pearl Fiberglass. They were top of the line at the time. I have little or no experience with the later, fiberglass lined shells.
True about the bearing edges, but they shells are too thin to have anything more than a simple round-over bearing edge.
I just found a double bass set of these and am contemplating the restoration of them. They are loud and resonant. Sound is in the ear of the beholder I suppose.
