1971 Ludwig silver sparkle set

I'm just about finished with my first 'restoration', a 1971 Ludwig "Big Beat" set, and now I'm getting the itch to get another smaller kit, something like a Ludwig Jazzette or Downbeat set, or an equivalent from another US company. Unfortunately I can't justify to the Mrs. getting another kit right now, so if I'm going to bring something else home, I'll probably have to let these go in order to make room (and to insure domestic tranquility.)

Several photos of my Ludwigs are posted under another thread here.

I don't want to go the eBay route because I don't want to go through the hassle of shipping them. So if I sell them, I want to do it locally via Craigslist, or sell them to someone here on the VDF who is able to pick them up in the Chicago area. So...what could I realistically expect to get for these drums (just the silver sparkle drums - not the hardware, cymbals or snare shown in the photos.) Also, is it realistic to think I might be able to trade these drums for a smaller kit like those mentioned above from approximately the same era?

Any and all advice is appreciated.

As you probably also know, GOOD vintage stuff doesn't do great on C'list. So I'd say you gotta expect to get 15-20% less than what you'd get on eFlay.

So, while you could possibly fetch maybe $650-750 with snare, no cymbals, no hardware; on eFlay...I think on C'list you would get about $500-575 or so. You could ask $650 and see what folks offer....

Matched Jazzette kits are probably the rarest of the rare vintage Ludwig kits.

Jazzettes with some kind of "amendments" are also rare.

Jazzette bass drums are the rare part. They are one of the most desirable vintage Ludwig kits to collectors. I highly doubt you will even find one if you look a long, long time. The ones that exist in drum discussion forum worlds are already known and documented. The ones that are as of yet unknown really seem to be hiding well!

Downbeat kits are another story. I think with a little perseverance, you would be able to find a pretty nice example of a matched Downbeat kit. They are still out there.

If I saw this 2 weeks ago I would of been all over this. I live in Schaumburg, I wish I would of saw this.

I bought a 22" 61 silver sparkle ludwig bass and matching snare ('60) off craigslist recently.

Best of luck on selling, im still trying to find a reasonably priced floor tom and rack tom to complete the set.

The "funny" thing is that I have yet to see a Jazzette from the later catalogs show up anywhere on EBay or elsewhere. The only ones I have seen in my 10 years of collecting are ones from the late 60's and early 70's. I've never seen any Ludwig Jazzettes from the last years of their inclusion in any catalog.

Has anyone else seen a late model Jazzette?
