1970s vintage Sonor Kit help

Loading...

Hi guys

I have owned and attempted to restore a 1970s west german sonor tear drop kit. All the shells were present and correct as well as being in good nick. The chrome pieces were visabley rusted but after many hours of care they do shine but are marked heavily where the chrome has gone.

After many months of fun and love putting her back together and marking her work I am sadly having to sell her due to moving house, needing the space and the cash. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on the best way to do this, either as a full kit or in parts, drum by drum and of any places it may be best to list her (other then ebay, for now) to get her to a more direct market other then people wanting a cheap kit for their kids. her age and original features i believe deserve more then this.

Any advice gratefully received.

Please give more info as to sizes, problems/missing parts, etc.

I vote keep the kit together.

I'm curious as to how much you'll ask for the kit, as well as your personal review of performing with them!

Having never played Sonor's personally, I'll just ask you this: Are they really heavy drums?

Just to give you an idea: recently I've sold a similar 3 pieces kit (bass drum, rack tom and floor tom) each one separately, as the wrap wasn't 100 % matching. I've got in total EUR 150 for all three shells. The condition was worse than yours (non-restorated, heavy chrome pitting on nearly all lugs etc.).

So I guess that yours (location USA?) would catch EUR 250 or more (only the three shells). Plus extra for snare drum, stands and cymbals.

Finding hardware/parts for those is expensive here, but if everything is there,in this market I would guess 400.00 or so,but I have seen nice examples teardrops go for a lot more, depending on condition, sizes and finish.

I had a friend that had late 60's teardrop kit,6 ply,and that was a joy to play.

Thanks for the input chaps. I'll answer some of you questions;

Its just the rack tom, floor tom and bass drum shells that are vintage. 'most' of the legs and stands etc are modern plus the snare is a sonor force 505.

the wooden shells are in i think good condition its the silver rims and nuts that have the chrome pitting i was talking about. think 90% of the lugs and nuts etc are the orginals, ive been trying to pick up the odd replacement when i find them.

I understand your prob with getting parts out there in the usa (im in the uk) and been on contact with St drums in Germany, who's a specialist, he agrees that tear drop bits are hard to get hold of!

As for playing them, its great, why im so sad to have to let them go. lovely big and deep sound. they are actually really light drums for moving around ive had a few kits in my time and its definitely one of the lightest to transport yet the heaviest in sound. cant beat old kits for being well made.

will put up the shell sizes and some more pics soon as i can, i know your all interested. thanks for all you input on prices, its good to have the shared knowledge.
