1967 Ludwig Gold Coast, Burgundy Sparkle

Loading...

I thought you guys might want to see these beauties - I also have a matching 12, 13, 16, and 22, and am on the quest for a 14x14. This little "Gold Coast" was a cocktail type kit - the snare is a 13 x 3 "Jazz Combo" and the bass drum is 18 x 12 "Jazzette." The rail mount was added, and my question for you guys is whether or not it could have been factory added by Ludwig?

Nice kit! It's highly doubtful that the rail consolette was factory-original/added -due to the fact that the two arms are from different periods of time. My guess would be that it started out as a Gold Coast kit and then the former owner decided to convert it to a regular, "sit-down" kit by adding a railmount in the only available position, i.e., in the "front" (closest to the resonant head) -as opposed to the "back", as would be the case with a true Jazzette baby bass drum. It would seem that the idea, although well-intentioned, is flawed -in that, those straight bass drum spurs, in conjunction with the railmount being in the front, would cause a balance problem -unless a rather unconventional positioning of the railmount's "L" arms was employed. That's my reasoning why it probably isn't a factory installation. I mean, it could have been special-ordered that way...because anything is possible...but I would bet against it.

Burgundy sparkle is a nice color -even when I've seen faded versions of it, it is still very pretty -looks like root beer!

I don't know what the value would be for it, but I know that people will pay crazy money for those little bass drums -I did!

Thanks for the info! I can't tell if these are faded or not since I haven't seen any other burgundy sparkles in person. However the color under the lugs is the same as everywhere else, so maybe not? I believe the original drummer used this kit to accompany a 60's vocal group on a wide variety of gigs, and bought all the drums to be able to mix and match. I have a feeling the rail mount was dealer installed - I've since removed it and will probably use a dual tom post where the diamond mount is. The toms all have the same born on date, yet the 16 has a clear interior and the others white. Interesting also is the 12 and 13 are both left side toms!

It very well could have been installed by a dealer...but likely not a factory installation. In any case, that's probably how I would handle using the kit, too....like you said. Once you locate the 14 X 14, you will have a nice grouping of very rare Ludwig drums.

I agree, your kit does not appear to be faded. I was just saying that even when burgundy sparkle does fade (I've seen many examples of it) it still looks good. Different Ludwig sparkle finishes faded in different ways...Red sparkle often fades to an orange-ish red...green sparkle fades to a yellowish/ginger ale color...silver sparkle fades to a light greenish tint...etc.

Nice collection you got there! If you don't mind my asking...what did you pay?

Yeah, I'm wondering just how hard it will be to find that 14x14. I paid $1500, which included cases, hardware, and cymbals. I don't really know how well I did, but I figured it was worth that and more for all those drums. Can anyone give an estimated value for the snare? I've never seen one in Burgundy and have heard it's quite rare.

Absolutely gorgeous red sparkle jazzette kit, btw. Any more pics yet?

I can only say that I've seen the Downbeat snares go for SICK money! (saw a BLUE sparkle one (not a rare sparkle), but it went for nearly $700.00!!! Of course, it must have come to a bidding war among the many people out there who own a vintage BLUE sparkle kit who wanted to use the matching Downbeat to transform the value.

The Jazz Combo? I don't know...but the burgundy sparkle is a rare sparkle color and I would guess it could go for $500 or more. I'd say you did really well for all you got. Nice score!

How hard would it be to find the 14 X 14? REEEEEAAAALLLY hard....but not impossible. I'll keep my eye out for one for you.

Well, I'm going to have to find either a blue sparkle 8x12 or a burgundy 14x14 pretty soon, because right now I'm playing on the world's ugliest Jazzette jelly bean kit! Sure sounds good though.
