1965 Club Date Find and Restore from CL Last viewed: 31 minutes ago

Okay not much of a restore as it was in pretty good shape to begin with. Just a complete strip down bath, polish the chrome, paint the hoops, wax the shells job. But a pretty sweet score though. I saw this monster frankenstien kit listed on Craigslist for $400.00 with roto toms double bass etc... and I saw one extra tom had a B.O. Badge so I decided to go give it a look. When I got there I noticed that part of the kit had keystone badges so I swooped up everything.

After sorting it all out I realized I had a full matching Club Date from 65! Plus some other goodies. The rack tom and floor tom had date stamps, It came with a beautiful looking and sounding 68' acrolite (also date stamped) with case, The original cowbell and cymbal arm plus a 60's Ludwig Throne (think the actual seat is a 70's)...oh and a pair of Ludwig standard hi-hat cymbals!(that look cool but sound horrible)...The only ding on the whole deal was that a previous owner did the dreaded Diamond plate install on the kick drum but she'll be a players kit in my small studio anyway. Okay enough blabbering here are some pics!...oh and sizes 12, 14, 20

shame about that diamond plate mount, BUT ANYWAY: Amazing kit. I truly love that BDP color and the "ClubDateLook". Great score! I'd put some screws into the empty holes where the RailConsolette was, just for the looks...

I would put a rail consolette back in the holes where the rail should be mounted. The diamond plate mounting holes can be repaired in several ways. I think that I would opt for a simple metal plate (chrome plated) held on with matching chromed carriage bolts in the four existing holes at the edges. The center hole will be covered up. As you say, it will be a player's drum set. But, that U-G-L-Y unused diamond shaped mount will look ten times worse than the simple cover plate. And, the little tom will be back home where it belongs on a rail consolette. Or, you can avoid covering up the diamond plate holes by using that fitting for mounting the tom on the bass drum where it belongs. Then, fill the holes for the rail with chromed carriage bolts.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Thanks for all the kind words. I was shocked when I was coming home with this one! Hoping it will be close to a free kit once I sell off all the roto toms, double kick pedals and CB 700 stuff that came with it.

I am actually utilizing the Diamond Plate right now as an internal mic stand.

I have a very small home studio with limited floor space which makes this kit and my 64 Downbeat perfect size kits for the room. Using the Diamond Plate as a mic stand gets me one more stand off the floor. I use modern hardware when I play. The vintage stands go away after picture time. I have converted to using a vintage Slingereland snare stand though.

Great looking kit! If you decided you wanted to plug that hole I have some BDP wrap I could send you to patch it. Let me know.

Cheers!

What city did you find this gem in?

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....
