1961 Gretsch Drum Set?

Loading...

Greetings all,

I recently got my old Gretsch set of drums out of storage and played with some friends one of which asked how old the set was, what I knew about it and what it was worth today.

My late Dad bought it for me for $167.00 for the bass drum and snare (I later replaced it with the Chrome Slingerland Snare) after a year of drum lesions from Ridgewood Music in New Jersey in 1961 when I was in 7th grade. I added the rest as time went on.

Can you help me identify the set, when it was made and how much it might be worth?

Thanks,

Peter LoCascio

Peter. man your ford falcon is super cool! Now your drums this is a combination of a renown seperate tension kit and a name band kit, the color is midnight blue pearl, looks like the 2 flat base cymbal stand are ludwigs! the soft bags are McINTOSH BAGS, it probably is 1961, does the bass drum have gretsch paper tags inside them?? your toms are maybe 1964, they probably do have the tags inside of them! Peter with the single tension bass drum, and the colors not matching, and with it being pieced together, and the slingerland snare drum,1200.00-1500.00, in this economy!

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

That is a very nice set of drums and a very nice Falcon Sprint. That bass is quite rare and unique, being single tension. That doesn't always equal monetary value. But with the cool Ludwig period-correct cymbal stands and the nice condition,I'd say 1,500-$2,000.Why are the spurs reversed? Is that a 14 floor tom?

Looks like a cool old 50's Gretsch. It is very possible it is a matched set. I would say $1,600 is a fair price. Looks to be a slingerland snare?

Gorgeous! My 50s Gretsch set has the same finish, but unlike most Midnight Blue Pearl drums you see (including mine), there's virtually no fading at all on your wrap. These drums often fade to a slate grey or even a hospital green color. Yours still have the deep, rich blue they were made with. Really, really nice.

Have they been kept in bags for most of their lives?

Kits:
1950s Gretsch Name Band in Midnight Blue Pearl (13/16/22/14sn)
1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)

Good golly miss molly, that's a pretty set of drums. I'm impressed. I'm a sucker for large chip. What the heck happened to those bass spurs??? Pretty freaky. I have NO clue what the current value would be, but I do want you to know ... they are NICE looking.

Nothing wrong the spurs, they're just put on wrong. They actually should be switched.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....
