1960's Tear Drop Sonor Tom Collapse repair, and tom leg mount needed.

Loading...

Hi Folks, probably been asked and answered, i'm so sad :( My beautiful Tear drop drum set tom is starting to collapse)

I do not tune this tom tom high. It's just so thin at 3 ply beech.

I have a few sides that are flattening out staggered between the staggered lugs.

I have taken to mounting the tom on a snare mount rather that on the original arm to stop further damage.

The bearing edges are now staring to delaminate from the shell where the flat spots are starting. A big mess.

Is there a way to install a centre interior shell ring that will reform this to round.

Or should i let this just be and play it like it is. I have to admit, it doesn't sound horrible, it still has a long sustain, and no pitchy over tones.

Also I need to purchase a Floor Tom Leg mount and nut, as i have stripped one. Is there a place that has these for sale?

THanks,

i'm so upset that she's dieing on me... this thing has been going strong for years, and records/performs beautifully. I just don't want to have to find a tom, and loose the numbers matching 4pc. Good luck finding wrap in that blue pearloid either to re-finish a donor in, i've looked everywhere.

Suggestions ??

Show us some pics. These guys have lots of Sonor stuff. http://www.stdrums.de/

Ebay probably wont have one. This is going to be tuff to find. Go to the wanted section on this forum and post a wanted ad. You could probably take yours to a machine shop and have it drilled and tapped for a larger bolt or screw. There are many sonor guys on here. Get on this forum here "Vintage Non-Usa Drums" Reinforcment rings are available from various drum suppliers also.

Pics. from inside and outside of damaged areas !!

Sometimes the bolt is harder than the nut and you find the threads from the nut inside the threading of the bolt, wich is not damaged, see if you can remove the rounded over threads from the bolt !!

The quick answer is 'yes'...you can install add'l interior reinforcing rings to bring the shell back to a rounder shape. I have done this on some old, old Japanese kits with some success.

If you wanna do it yourself, you can either order rings from Precisiondrum.com or Aitwood.com. Or...you can do what I do; actually order a shell and cut it up into rings, if you have access to a wood shop setup. You basically wanna get a ring diameter which is one size larger than the tom (i.e. you want a 13" ring if the tom is a 12" tom). I usually use their 6-ply maple shells (these are pretty thin...not like the 6-ply shells of the 70's-90's).

You wanna cut the ring, and stick it inside the tom and then size it ~ i.e make add'l cuts in the ring, removing add'l pieces of the ring until the 2 cut edges of the ring will butt each other with some difficulty (because you want there to be tension on that ring to push on the interior of the shell). Then the trick becomes gluing it in there straight. You need clamps and if you want one in the middle of the cylinder, you need bracing. If you are gonna just do the 2 edges, then you just need a sh#tload of small clamps. I sometimes am able to utilize the lug holes to help clamp the new ring to the existing shell....

Thanks Everyone, i will give the ring a try. I have a full woodshop here at home, so that is a good thing. (Never thought about cutting a donor shell down, great idea.) Photos are taken unsing a straight edge across the shell depth. You can see that some of the deformation is worse between different lug groups. I tried to pick the worst bearing edge pictures.

As far as the Floor Tom leg mount, mine is a Large teardrop, with the T shaped bolt, that accepts either the Sonor drum key, or hand wind with the t...

Mikey777, can you provide me a price for a complete unit. (The one i have is "hooped" bad drum joke) It is insert and threads.

Please send price and payment instructions to my personal address:
