1960's Pearl 4 piece? Last viewed: 19 seconds ago

Loading...

I am thinking about buying these drums from a friend. We don't really know much about them except the were built by Pearl sometime in the 1960's.

About the drums:

The drums have all new Remo heads on them. They are missing the rings and hardware on the BD and the TT. The inside of the bass drum has a strip of the wood missing, you can see it in the 1st picture. Other than that, the drums are in pretty good condition.

Any ides on what the drums are worth (just the drums, no hardware)?

Thanks,

Jamie

Couple hundred clams or so.

Looks like old '60s Pearl set. Find a bass drum hoop and matching claws & T-rods, and a hoop and tension rods for the tom, and it'll be much better off if you decide later to sell it.

Nice for practicing, open-mic gigs, or just knockin' around.

I have an older Pearl set with the old oval Pearl badge with the red P. I picked up the kit for 200 bucks with cases and some old hardware. The kit finish is in good shape, but the drums aren't made of wood. They are some kind of compressed wood/fiber. The snare sounds like crap, and probably even with work, can't sound good, but the rest of the kit is nice and sounds great. 20" bass, 12" rack tom, 14"floor tom and it's my gigging kit.

[COLOR="DarkRed"]Are they badged 'Pearl" ?

Typically a 60's Pearl would only be worth a few hundred as Beatnik said.

BUT...that is a RARE Japanese '60's ripple finish. Not made anymore; can't even get it custom-made.

The rarer Japanese wraps, those are worth a bit more. I'd say $375-500 in good shape if the hardware's included. Given the missing hoops and the missing portion of ply in the bass, it drops back down to the $250 range.

Replacement hoops coast about $10-15 for toms.snare, and $15-25 for a bass hoop at drummaker.com.

Tell me...how many lugs does the FT have?

What's the asking price ? Also..are you buying to resell, or to make it your kit ?

Looks to be the 6-ply luan shells, painted interiors. If you are willing to do some sanding to those bearing edges, it'll be a pretty good sounding old kit. Not overly loud or overly punchy; but nice and sorta woody vintage-y sounding. Do that and you will have a very cool, repsectable gigging kit...unless you play headbangin'-death-metal-thrash-sh#t-sound-behind-a-wall-of-noise-and-guitars-spitting-beer-on-the-audience sorta music...in which case...these won't cut it.

If you had access to a drumshop or cabinet shop that could recut the batter edges to a sharper 45 degree, then that kit would really start to sing.

But regardless, it's a cool old kit w/ some serious MOJO...and the wrap is on the rare side.

They are badged "Pearl" drums. The FT has 8 lugs. We never set a price for the drums, I told him that I would try to find out what they might be worth. I was looking to find a gig kit so I can leave my 67 Ludwig kit at home. This one also has a 20" bass drum which is the main reason I like it. I will be playing country/honky tonk/folk/bluegrass type stuff, so I think the sound and volume will be fine.

backbeatkeeper, I like the kit! The sizes are what I would love to find for my gig kit.

So $250- $275 for the kit (no hardware) is a good price?

[COLOR="DarkRed"]It's a good price, yes. Go for it.

When you get it, we can figure out if you wanna deal with the missing ply area on the bass drum (there are a few options you have there to repair it).

But, hell yeah, go for it. For the kind of music you are gonna be playing, it'll be a good match.

Check the baring edges, they will probably be a bit rough...alleviated by the recommendations above.

Came across this kit and the asking price is $800. Is it worth that? Hoping someone on here will know. Have more pictures if you would like to see them. Thoughts?
