1960s Ludwig Club Date Hoops Questions

Hi All,

Hoping some vintage Ludwig experts can help me out with this. Working on a 1965 Club Date resto and trying to find matching steel hoops for ones that are missing.

I'm pretty sure the original hoops that came with the kit were chrome over steel, as magnet did stick. I found a vintage chrome over steel hoop, but it seems to be more whitish/bluish in hue than what I have, leading me to believe they may be nickel. I have had some one suggest they may just be faded dull chrome?

Check out these photos:

I stacked the hoops to compare finishes. The top hoop is the chrome, and the bottom hoop is the original I have. See how the original is more of a yellowish hue? Any ideas or insight on what these are or how to find matching hoops?

Thanks!!,

You might try Jack Lawton of Lawton Drums.

On a side note I have a 1967 club date that I am restoring. I would be willing to part with the 12" and 14" hoops since I will likely throw on some new ones. PM me if you are interested.

that original looks nickel to me. could just be my eyes though. Ludwig actually started using some nickel over steel hoops in '64. ive got two original 64 drums that have them.

I concur, the original looks nickel.

It seems Ludwig did a lot of mix-match on Clubdate sets. My '64 had chrome hardware except for the floor tom leg brackets.

If your lugs are nickel, I'd hunt down matching hoops. Otherwise I would sell the nickel to someone looking to make an old WFL more complete.

Just my 2 cents

Interesting on the mix and match hardware. Maybe because at that time they both were so close in finish? I've seen nickel hardware before but it always looked so much more dull than chrome. Maybe earlier nickel was that way?

I went back and compared all hardware on the kit. Everything looks to be nickel besides the bass drum claws & T rods and the floor tom legs and mounting brackets.

Since the rest of the steel hoops I have are sounding more and more like nickel, I want to try to match those as best as possible.

If anyone has any leads on a 12" and 14" six lug, I'm looking.

Thanks again!
