1960's Ludwig 20" Black Oyster Pearl hoop

Hello everyone,

I just posted a thread in the "Wanted to Buy" section, but thought this might be a good place to post my question as well...

This is my second post, so please go easy on me. But I am looking for a 1960's Ludwig 20" Black Oyster Pearl hoop for my first restoration kit.

My sister told me that her friends husband had an old kit he would sell me and so I followed up on it. I knew it was a Ludwig, that was it. It is a 12/14/20 Black Oyster Pearl kit with pre-serial COB snare and the guy basically handed it to me. I had no idea what it was until I took some time on Vintage Drum Guide and this forum. I am pumped to be fixing this thing up. It seems to be a pretty sought after kit.

Anyways, I think the guy said he took the (reso) hoop off sometime back in the 70's and doesn't have it anymore. I have gotten most of the replacement parts that it was missing from eBay, but cannot seem to find a 20" hoop.

I am new to this vintage drum stuff, so can someone tell me whether or not I will ever find one of these hoops (and for a reasonable price), or if I am dreaming?

me too. and a strip of 12 to ten inch also for a repaIR. GOOD LUCK DREAM THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM ,WHO OWNS THOSE HOOPS, KNOW THEY R GOLD , I LOVE YOUR KIT HOW ABOUT PICS....OR YOU CAN SELL THEM TO ME, AND ILL play them without hoops **** every one else did back then LOL

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp





once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I am going to hold on to them, sorry. But not sorry! Ha! I will keep looking for an original hoop, but now I know they are hard to come by.

I am endorsed by Infinity Drumworks (a new company from MN) and they make all their shells and hoops in house, so I am going to have them make me a hoop and I'll get some inlay from Precision. It will have to do! I just want to get this darn thing fully set up and playable. I am so close I can hear them!

A few things...

First, I said the guy basically gave it to me, meaning I paid for it. He gave it to me cheap because he hadn't used them in years, saw I appreciated the drums, and knew I was passionate about drumming. He sat and told me stories about growing up playing and gigs he'd played over the years. It was fun and we both were happy about the sale.

Second, I don't remember ever complaining in my post about paying for a hoop. I just said I'd like to find one for a reasonable price like any other human being. Also, I'm 25, just got married about 6 months ago, and I can't justify throwing hundreds of dollars at one piece.

Third, pictures are above and there will for sure be more once I get it completed.

Fourth, I am glad to see you urge people to get there BD lugs off the ground because my 2 front bottom ones are scarred badly.

When I started reading this post, I was going to suggest just getting a new one and then getting the inlay strips from either Precision or Jammin' Sam's. Their current stock of 60's BOP both come about as close as you can come.

I do have a couple of Ludwig 20" hoops in pretty good shape, but also have a 20" BD that they go on. The BD needs some repairs, and one of these days I'll get to it.

BTW -- GREAT FIND! I'm sure you'll enjoy them!

I just sold a 60's Ludwig black 20" hoop for $25 no inlay. Anway if you want to sell the snare I am interested.

Find a used hoop on the bay or on here cheap, throw a repro inlay in that hoop, put it on your batter side and play those drums. The crowd can see the nice original and the repro can be your dirty little secret.
