1960s John Grey Autocrat Snare

Hey All,

I have recently purchased a 1960s Autocrat snare. Generally it is in reasonable condition although requiring a deep clean.

The only two problems is that the strainer is defective (it turns all the way round and does not hold the snares tight). Having looked inside other autocrats of this period online, it would seem there is a circular engaging piece missing.

The second issue is that the grub screw at the bottom of the strainer has been severed.

I would like to keep the drum original. Does anyone have the spare parts I require or any advice?

Hello Andy,

Nice to have you here at the forum. There's a company in the UK called Hindle and Heely that has some spare parts for John Grey drums. If they don't have it, they can probably tell you exactly what you need. Also, post what info you already have in the 'wanted to buy' section here. I have a John Grey snare, but it's from the '30s, so I'm afraid I can't be much help. Completely different mechanism.

Hope it works out. If not, and it were my drum, I'd look into having an authentic reproduction made. I don't know of anybody in the UK that does that right now, but I can find out soon enough.

I will upload a couple of pics of the strainer and an image i found online showing the "engaging piece" that would seem to be missing. I'll do this when I get to work (on ipad now. Doh)

I now have the opportunity to purchase this Rose Morris drum, which "looks" to have an identical strainer:

What do you think? I know Rose Morris took over the John Grey company, but would the strainer be the same? I believe that this drum is vastly inferior to the Autocrat.

I'm new to the vintage drum game but am getting more enthusiastic each day!

Hi Andy,

Welcome to the Autocrat family!

Myself, I inherited a John Grey 60s WMP snare. Really nice looking and sounding snare. Mine isn't original as I'm missing the lever. But I can live without a lever, although I'm still planning to bring the snare to the next-with-lever-level ;-)

Hard to find autocrat parts, especially if you are outside the UK.

Hope you will have some luck in aquiring that donor-snare.

In case you will not use the lever of the donor-snare, I will be interested in it.

Good luck in "restoring" your Autocrat!
